I have been missing my 510 since I got the Protege with only a 901 adapter. I ordered a little 901-510 adapter from Good Prophets that arrived this week.

Since I got my mechanical switch I have had spotty results with the 901. Tried about everything and still had to mash button until fingers are indented. After a week, still not regularly hitting without the heavy push. Once I put on the 510 adapter however, it is working like a charm most of the time. Much lighter touch.

Since the button makes contact with the 901 adapter on the Protege, it seems that the 510 atty is less sensitive to minor voltage fluctuation than the 901. Can t check with tact switch since it died the day after I got my mech switch.

Anyone else with this seen this happen?

Try cleaning out your mechanical switch, there might be some loose delrin in there interrupting contact.

If that doesn't work, then take a peek in the troubleshooting section as there is a video floating about with some tips about the switch.

Thanks Navyboym,

I have cleaned out any extra delrin to help contact. I did that at the start and there was excess.
As I stated, the 510 is working close to perfectly with the extra adapter where the 901 Protege adapter alone is not. That is where my confusion comes from.
The extra piece seems to aid contact somehow even though it should have no affect. This has been the same with several 901 attys and did not do that with the tact switch. Happy to have it hitting good, just wonder why.

Try taking the switch apart and sanding all the contact points use a needle nose pliers to pull out the contact pieces.

I also removed the copper ring from the button and sanded it up. Then put it on a bic ball point pen and press it, to make it perfectly round. Push it back on the button and squeeze it a little with the pliers so it stays on good.

Also when screwing the adaptor back on with the atty attached, I press the button as soon as I hear the atty fire up I'll stop. Just try not to over tighten the adaptor.

These things work for me, your mileage may vary!

The 901's are notorious for cutting the little o-ring insulator off at the center connection if over tightened. I shorted out two or three tact switches like that / quit using them.

It may have to do with the connection (or lack of) at the center post.

Try unscrewing the adapter and pushing up on the center post to see if that'll make it contact easier?

Thanks for the replies. I have tried a rubber band for braces to use as a gasket, but it does not allow enough room for the switch to travel in the housing. I have cleaned all the contacts several times as well.

Since it only occurs with the 901 atty I think I will just stick to the 510 which I currently prefer anyway. I will have to get a PS adapter for the 510 since the screw on one from GP leaks higher up and makes a mess when I use carts while driving in LA traffic. For dripping, the extra adapter is just fine.
