There was a USB 2amp adapter for sale for very little cash , but the supplier just ran out a few days ago. Someone had posted this item:

FRYS.com.|.RHINO PST-15U

as the same 2amp adapter(I have not personally verified this). It's more expensive, but still reasonable. The original seller will have the $4 shipped,USB 2amp adapters available again in a couple of months.

Ok just got this in the mail today, super fast shipping btw! I cant seem to get it to work. when i plug it into my computer i get a power surge error message. and when i plug it into my usb power adapter (5v at 1000mA) the light blinks. its like the extension is trying to draw to much power is there anything i can do to get it to work?

I have the exact same problem. (PC error). Haven't been able to 5v vape w/ my Protege yet... other than very briefly.. (it was GREAT! while it lasted...) :(

Got 3 of those adapters mentioned in this thread and blew 2 of them out within a minute or 2. Haven't unpacked the 3rd... & glad it wasn't my pc hub that blew. Something is not right... that's for sure...

Anyway.... at $10 a pop (heehee) now... thought I'd give you a heads up before you expect that to solve your problem like I did.

What atty are you using Jas? If it's a 901 it sounds like it's been overtightened and the insulator has shorted out. It'll blow anything you connect it to, it's a direct short.. (If it is a 901)

Does your PC have usb 1.1 or 2.0?

One way you can tell is you may see a message sometimes when plugging in things (cameras, hard drives, etc) that this "device could perform faster..." on the bottom left by the clock. Of course this is assuming you have a PC and not a Mac. In any case you will not get any message or alert with the Protégé as it is strictly for power

USB 1.0 runs off a different voltage then USB 2.0, which is 5v. Also, depending on your power supply and what you have in that PC, you could be drawing too much power! This is bad. I have taxed a power supply before but have not gotten any messages, usually then thing just power cycles off and on every three seconds.

EDIT: I have an old PC hanging around with usb 1.1 and an weak power supply. The protege usb will not work, I just tried for ya. This may be your issue.

My main PC uses a power supply that is 500w - 34amps split between two rails. My draw is usually at about 3/4 max load with the processor and SLI graphics setup. I have never had an issue, but I do not use my PV USB while more than a quarter of the USB ports are in use. I also only use it plugged into one of the front USB ports that I know is powered by a different rail then my processor/one of the gfx cards.

A Griffin usb wall adaptor can be picked up at Best Buy for $10 which also included a car adaptor as well. Have not tried it in the car but the wall adaptor works great. I wish this protege usb cable was designed to screw in the protege (like the BB usb adaptor) but thats a seperate issue for another day.

Using a 510. Definitely not overtightened... (though I'd like to.. as it has a good 1/8 inch gap that accentuates leaking... but I assume this fit is how all P's are..?)

The $1.95/$10 adapters specify 5v... and since it went thru 2 of those quickly.. I highly doubt my pc was an issue. Should be 2.0. Reasonably new.. ish... 3GB ... widescreen /flat desktop LCD monitor has 2 usb ports that I use for cameras, etc and where I tried the passthru. Thought that would be safer than tower?

Appreciate your input very much as I'd sure like to be able to vape at 5v... one of the main reasons I had settled on this model... & as you know the cables are substantial/ quality. It really has a decent vape at 3.7 w/ batts and would be nice just to have an alternate power source to save them for on the go.

Thanks again.... and I'd be grateful for any other ideas/possible solutions to this mystery.

Hey Jas, I'm really sorry about the FRY adapter's. I was just passing along info that someone had brought up in another thread(that the FRY Rhino were the exact same as a similar looking 2amp adapter that is no longer in stock from the original seller). The original 2AMP adapters worked great(over 100 were sold and there wer no negative posts, I myself have 4 and they all work great with my PS USBPASS). I'm sorry for your monetary loss. But thanks for the info. I will go back to the original thread and pass the word that these FRY RHINO's are, in fact, not the same as the previos 2amp adapters that were being sold.

The original 2Amp USB adaptyers(the ones that are sold out) were available form here:

http://www.usbpoweradapter.net/usb-dual-power-adapter.htm

As you can see they look very similar so it is understandable that someone seeing this on the Fry website may have gotten the 2 confused.

It's probably too late now..... (if u already posted a warning elsewhere) but mine WERE the originals ... $3.95 w/sh x 3 (lost 2). I was just trying to give her a heads up at $10 a pop now that they're sold out. I think they ARE the same anyway... aren't they? ... and our same originals work great for you... the only difference being passthru vs extention.

I did see another post w/ a mention of someone's laptop blowing... so I ordered these after seeing your thread(s). My USB ports are 2.0 as I fig'd they should be recent enough... 3GB typo LOL= 300, dual processors... and my PC is smart enough to disable the port... then makes me unhook & click to re-enable it when I attempted to use the PS USB ext.

Should be same (2.0) w/ my little $2k laptop as it is even newer than the desktop but no way was I going to try it after seeing the trashed/fried laptop post... & w/ my desktop's warning msgs.

Soooooo ... thought the solution would be to get the wall thing like yours & not worry about it..... but...... I did not expect THAT to blow..... then TWO of them in a row...... so there IS a problem... just not sure what/why exactly... but I don't think it is my pc OR the $1.95 things. Hope this clarifies ......

Same exact USB power adapter...I have both, same model #, different logo decals, but neither is the original manufacturer's logo. Regardless, there's no problem with any of them...the problem is likely something else.

Thanks much for the info/confirmation. I thought they looked exactly the same in stats & appearance. I know Steve & gang are probably busy as heck so I'll figure it out eventually. I suspect a short.. it's just a matter of what's safe to test it with.

My dad is an electrician.... so hopefully he can check it without blowing out something expensive.

That can be done without needing/risking a USB port... right? Anyone know?

good question, jas. shoot steve or casey a pm and see what they say, in the meantime maybe brock or someone else with more knowledge on the electrical side of things will be able to help you. my advice, if you haven't done so already, don't open up and use that third usb adapter until you've straightened out the unit for sure.

best of luck!

Thanks for the input buGG. Yeah the 2 adapters are the same, so there should be no problem with them. It would seem highly unlikely that 2 would blow in succession. As buGG said, save the 3rd until you figure out what's going on for sure, as they are definitely great adapters and well worth the price. It would be a shame to lose all 3 of them.

if you have a OHM meter I would put the leads on the outer most pins of the usb plug on the cable and press the switch, if it reads 0 ohms then you have a direct short in the usb adapter or in the protoge itself and that could definatly cause it to blow the AC to usb adpater. You should get a reading around 3 ohms maybe a tad more

Anything less then 2.5 ohms at 5volts will be over the 2 amp limit of the ac/usb adapter

Just got a reading of 2.6 ohms (outer pins of the original 1st generation PS USBPass with a 510 wet atty). Wow, pulling about 1.92 amps, that's close.
