You can just turn the disc under the top cap to shorten the centre pin. This will give more support if you drop the device.

I generally start with the centre pin on minimum, add the tank flush then just tighten the centre pin up to meet the tank.

I've never really thought about adjusting it as it doesn't concern me as I said. You make a valid point though in terms of support in case I hurl it against the wall. I guess never having had a catastrophic device drop has made me lackadaisical.

Well, now you can have a gap by choice rather than default if you prefer :)
