Everytime you hear of someone doing a good deed to another, you say, "You are a good Samaritan." What was the big deal.......the Bible is full of awesome deeds in it. But why was this deed and this man remembered for almost 2000 years? We don't even know his name. Even non-Christians use his deed as an example by just using the word Samaritan.

The term “Good Samaritan” came from a parble in the Gospel of Luke (10:29-37).

A Good Samaritan is a person who helps another (out of love) when needed regardless of the person’s faith, color, citizenship, cleanliness, financial status, etc.

Jesus pointed out in scripture that the men (hypocrites) who should have helped (a Jewish priest and a Levite temple assistant) ignored a wounded robbery victim by passing him by. But a Samaritan (Samaritans and Jews were known to generally despise each other) stopped and cared for him out of pity and love from his heart for another being. The Samaritan also took money out of his own pocket to pay for the Jewish victim’s room and board time needed to recover … so he actually went above and beyond with his aid.

In a nutshell: Love, help and nurture others while hating the sin or problem … just like Joseph, Daniel, David and others did.

The reason it was remembered for almost 2000 yrs is b/c it was a parable in the Bible.

Great answer Sea! You are correct that the Jews hated the Samaritans. But the Gentiles hated them too. They weren't full blooded anything. In truth, I am a samaritan. They were half Jewish and half Gentile, and neither side accepted him into their fold. He was like a man without a country. This man, like you said, even though despised, helped this Jewish man who had been mugged AND, gave money out of his own pocket for his care, and that is why he is famous to this day! Amazing, isn't it?

When Israel became a country in May 1948 and Jewish people began to migrate, only the people whose mother was Jewish would be considered Jewish and invited in with open arms. The lineage had to come from the mother. Since my daddy was a (Messianic) Jew, I wouldn't be considered Jewish.....not because I'm a Christian, but because I'm Jewish through my daddy. I just had an ephinpany. Jesus was born of a virgin....so that would be through His mother's lineage. The Jews picked that up without realizing how Christian that is. Hmmmmmmmmmm......rather interesting.
