There are cartomisers and carto-tanks. Cartomisers are the empty or prefilled cartridges that you buy at gas station...they have cotten in them and I fill often using a Empty 10mL Needle Tip Bottle You can buy those anywhere for cheap. When using a cartomiser it's best to keep it topped off as if it becomes dry it can scorch the cotten and cause a burnt type flavor to appear. If you keep it topped off it won't do this and your flavor is more pronounced.

cartomisers look like this Cartomizers, Cartomizer, E-Cigarette Cartomizers | MadVapes

Now carto-tanks I have not used but look like this $8.94 Authentic Innokin Coil Heads for iClear 30s (5-Pack) 5-pack - 2.0ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping or like this $10.32 Swirl Acrylic Glass Carto Tank Kit (6.0mL) - 1.8ohm at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Notice how they have holes in the side. They sit inside of a tank/clearomiser and you shouldn't have to top those off. Those will absorb liquid from the tank that they are inside of through these holes. So as long as your tank has liquid in it these should absorb the liquid and supply it to the attomizer (the thing that heats up and turns the liquid to a vapor) automatically.

When using a cartomizer by itself...not in the tank...when the top of the cotten starts to look "white" that means there isn't any juice at the top...it may have settled all to the bottom. But when using those by themselves again you want to top those off from time to time when it turns "white" just to keep it saturated with juice so it doesn't scorch. Just don't overfill them as they will leak and not vape. Keep liquid away from the center tube...just put liquid on the outside cotten stuff.

Sorry if I rambled...I've been doing that more and more on here but hope that helps you out.

Bought a Smok carto tank. Salesman said when carto looks white to top off with juice. Well, what is the point of juice surrounding the carto in the tank if I have to keep topping it off?

oh dear. FAIL. :)

The top of your cartomizer will go back to almost white and you'll never see much juice up there again. As long as it's going in the holes and vaping good..... Vape on!

If the carto ever gets a bit dry, just do a couple of dry pulls on it. Inhale without hitting the power button on your device.

Yes, in a tank the top of the carto is going to eventually be white. As a pp said, the juice feeing into the bottom never really makes it up to the top of the filler. You should occasionally notice an air bubble coming out of the hole(s) in the carto tank. That's good, that's air coming out and juice going in. Also, as was mentioned if you start getting dry puffs take a couple of hits without firing the battery, you should notice a few bubbles then and you will be good to vape again.

Depending on the e-liquid you have in your tank and the size of the holes in the cartomizer, it may not be wicking enough to keep it saturated.

When this happens, you will get dry, bad tasting, or muted hits. Also it will tend to shorten the life cycle of the carto, since it is essentially burning itself and the filler, not the juice.

Topping off, basically helps keep the filler saturated.

Not to nitpick but the IClear 30s isn't a cartotank, it's just a DC clearo with a bunch of flavor wicks and 2 coils in a tube. I mean I guess it's stretching the bounds of language, but I certainly don't think of it as a cartotank, more like a super IClear 16 with a bunch of small flavor wicks.

Check my thread here. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...scussion/498658-100-vg-issues-carto-tank.html

Baditude posts about how the top of the carto becomes somewhat dry.

If you take strong hits with no power, you should see air bubbles come from the carto's holes/slots. Agreed with the above, if you are getting good vapes, keep on vapin!

yeah i was just trying to get some screen shots of the differences between a cartomiser and a carto/tank setup. Basically one is used on it's own and the other is used inside of tank and has holes where the juice seeps into.

There is so much terminology and some even disagree on the basic terminology...such as the definition of a passthrough it originally contained battery...but now days they don't, etc, etc. Since this was in the New Members forum I was trying to convey the major differences between a cartomiser and a carto/tank setup the best I could with pictures and links.
