First I want thank to thank everyone here for all the valuable information. I'm thinking about my first purchase of the Happy eGo Starter Kit:
Canadian E-cigarette Happy/Joye eGo Starter Kit - Black, Silver, White, Titanium

Reasons for purchasing:
Vendor is close to home and, from reading the comments here, has an extremely great reputation.
Apparently some Attys leak. I watched a couple of videos here that did help partially explain the issue and offered some solutions. I like the fact that they deliver heavy vapor and the battery lasts a long time.

My questions are:
If I purchase this product can I switch over to carts. From what I've read it seems doable.
I'm hoping to get manual batteries. Pros and Cons?
Can a 510 Atomizer be used with this unit?
Due to a recent sinus operation I have no sense of smell or taste and this condition may be permanent. Other than a lack of taste or a burning smell is there any other way of knowing when to refill.
I also plan on DIY refilling. Would carts or attys be best for this?
Again my heartfelt thanks to all that post in this forum. You provide great insight for all us noobs.

My first choice was the Happy 510 'Kit & Kaboodle' Starter Kit but am concerned about the battery life.

I use an ego and have from the start . I love it for what it DOES which in my case ( and hubby) keeps us off analogs. I know there are more powerful e cigs but for now this works great for us. I was a very heavy smoker also. Having good juice is SO very important . I believe strong ones helped at first because it can be hard to taste coming off of cigs. I use cartridges, attys and am using cartomizers also . I also direct drip to try flavors . It will depend. On how much time / inclination u have to fiddle with it all. If that is a concern try cartomizers , but IMHO carts and attys ar the cheapest and work well too.

Cart = Cartridge and it comes with cartridges. Cartridges are used on an atomizer

Carto = cartomizer (disposable, replaces the cart&atomizer, I can get a week to 10 days use out of each Boge carto) and yes you can use them

Yes you can use a plain 510 atomizer, standard or low resistance. Just never put an LR atty on a slim 510 and never charge a slim 510 in the Ego's fast charger cable (will damage slim batteries)

For refilling I definitely recommend cartomizers, with the atty+carts as a backup, and drip tip plus atty for testing juices and vaping occasional juices, and only put juices you like to vape a lot in cartos

if you use thin (20% or less VG) clear juices that drop no flavor sediment, you can look in the cartomizer - if the top stuffing has gone whiter or white it needs juice. On Boges I use a plastic or delrin drip tip as a mouthpiece - easy to pull off to look. And although they still leak, you can try various clear cartomizer (avoid slim CE2 - they crack and fall apart. Try CE3. Try handmade tank cartos with CE2 or CE3 replaceable guts inside.

See the bottom of my post here, below the ----, for how I fill simple stuffing cartos

You are definitely making a wise purchase. I really haven't seen a reason to switch from my Ego. As opposed to the other kits I have used, this kit is DEPENDABLE.

That's all I really wanted. Something that wouldn't leave me high and dry in the middle of my work day jonesin' for nicotine.

Your other questions have been answered but on the last one, please try dripping first you may like it. There is no need to check fluid levels or anything with that. Just add a drop or two and vape until you stop making vapor. Make sure your atomizer doesn't overheat that would be the big danger there I believe.
Another option for you would be a clearomizer. These things allow you to fill about 1ml of liquid and you can see the level it is at by just looking. If you are an average vapor, you should only have to refill it once during the day. Better yet, leave the house with two full units and you are set until tomorrow.

JMHO... good luck!

Thank you all so very much for some great info and inspiration.
cRaZyIpAdMoM...kudos to you and your husband as I am also a heavy smoker.
dormouse...you are a wealth of knowledge and experience and have given me other options PLUS correcting my misunderstanding of some accessories.
ricksinvest...yes I had read about dripping and it seems to be the way to go and you have reinforced that thought.

Edit: Thank you also wv2win. Unfortunately I'm concerned about Customs...maybe just too paranoid?? but the info is very much appreciated. Also thanks very much for the CASAA link. I have joined.
Boodle Thank you also for the suggestions. I kinda get envious when I surf this site and read all the posts about how delicious the flavors are BUT I will always remember when I couldn't breathe through my nose 24/ 7 and had constant sinus headaches so it's all good.

Thank you all again so very much...this truly is a community that cares and reaches out. I will be ordering tomorrow and am eagerly awaiting an E List..

Soon enough I'll be able to sign off "Happy Vaping".

Since you can't taste or smell learning the sound your ecig makes will be important. If you're dripping onto an atomizer to vape you'll learn it quickly. Gurgling sound means you overfilled. Light sizzle is just right. After a few vapes you'll begin to get the hang of it.

Cartos will also make a sizzling sound. This is probably your best option since you don't care if the flavor is muted by the filler material. Be careful. You won't be able to taste the difference when your cartomizer starts to run dry. Make a habit of removing the drip tip and take a peek inside often. If the filler looks dry, you need to top off your carto. Add drops on the outer walls of the carto and give it a slight thermometer shake. You're back in biz.

It's great news that you don't need to buy expensive juice. You can get a PG/VG blend with the nic level you choose and vape away. I've been vaping flavorless the last two days to clear up a tastebud issue. Not bad at all. I find myself vaping less and reaching for a PV for a nic hit rather than to enjoy a flavor. Good luck to you!
