Questions regarding resistance wire

I'm sure that someone has answered this somewhere but wading through the massive amount of information here is sometimes impossible.

At any rate, my question should be pretty straightforward. I would assume that as the number of the gauge gets smaller, the gauge gets bigger, right? That should also translate to smaller numbers, higher resistances?

I've been wrapping coils with 30 gauge kanthal at about 6-7 wraps and have been getting solid 1.6-1.8 ohms. I've recently switched to a variable voltage device and want to try out some higher resistance coils on it but don't want to drop the cash on replacement heads when I can make them just as easily and for a fraction of the cost.

This is partially correct;
the smaller the AWG, the fatter the wire = less resistance

28AWG - is a fairly thick wire with a small amount of resistance
32AWG - is fairly thin and has a higher resistance at the same length
