Rant-Must speak Spanish

I have been looking for several months for a flexible, part time job. I have a great job now, but it is part time and I need something to supplement. I have applied at jewel, Panera, Dominicks, Home Depot, etc. with no luck.

So today I was in the library. I am a big reader and spend a lot of time there. The thought "I should try to get a job here" just popped in my head when I went to check out and saw a sign "Now hiring part time desk clerk" WOW I think-I read the hours-perfect for me. Next the pay-pretty decent. Next-"Must be proficient in Spanish".

WTF-I am soooo sick of catering to "minorities" around here.

It does suck, but better than being on a border state. I just wish we could get some good mexican food here like in cali, heh.

One thing to keep in mind though, is the fact they might already have enough people who speak english, but no one who speaks spanish and would like someone who could handle that. I do not know Northlake well(in fact I was only there once for a contract job at Home Depot upgrading their network), so I do not know the demo's there but just a thought.

The USA hasn't tried to conquer the world. There was something called World War 2 a few years ago, it was a big deal. The USA along with Great Brittan and Russia saved the world.

and to Kathy

This is good work for my sister, where is the job?

Este trabajo esta bien para me hermana, a donde es?

Not really I don't have a sister.

Bilingual?- Fake it- I speak Spanish like a little kid, but I allway claim bilingual.

I know what you mean though. I grew up 3 miles from Tijuana border still live close. Here in S.D. they don't make sure white and black kids are speaking Spanish at level, but they sure help everyone learn English.

Wait you want people to speak English, they teach it... but still if you not bilingual your left behind....only one thing to do.... learn a little Spanish. Taco, Burrito, Tortilla...see it's easy

lol., i am spanish myself (from spain) and both my parents don't speak a bit of spanish and i friggin suck at spanish, i tried getting a job at best buy about a mile from my house.....i had to be bi-lingual....and i had to carry a conversation with the interviewer.....suffice to say that did not go well at all. and that is BS i graduated last year from H.S With honors in Math, English, and Biotech. Its blatant disregard for the hard working student trying to get a damn job while some kid just strolls in with no diploma but "can" speak both english and spanish ....i mean maybe its my fault that i didn't learn it whilst at school. But w.e , just putting in my 2 cents for the day :)

Ouch politics... It all comes down to what you believe and we will all fight tooth and nail with sweat and blood to stand behind what we believe in. I know a bit of Spanish, not proficiently but, I will not speak it unless I FEEL like it. I am a construction worker (electrician) in Texas and this comes up all the time! It is sad when leaders are to afraid to 'change' anything because they are afraid of a vote. IMHO, how many languages was the constitution written in? One. Even though the verbiage is not the same, we still use it today. It should be acceptable and even mandatory, that it is spoken in the workplace and at any place of business.

we should just all speak german ., allo bruder!., sprechen ze duetsche?

Well apparently Chinese is the most spoken language on the planet but I guess I wish we would all speak English because it's the only one that seems to sound good for music, just imagine your favourite song being sung in german or chinese!!!

Nico, I hate to say it, but as well as you did in HS, that really does not mean much for a job at best buy. They wanted someone who could speak spanish, and if someone came in there with a PhD in Physics with no experience and can not speak Spanish, they would choose the guy who could speak Spanish. You could compare this to 100 other jobs easily. But trust me, I know where you are coming from and right now I am in a similar boat. I mean hell, if you want a weird example, I have had Professors with PhD's in CS(especially this one), EE, and CE who couldn't get a computer tech job because they cant even trouble shoot a networking problem on Windows.
