RBAs a nessosary for mods?

Yes; what is needed is the coil to get RED HOT.

With a vv or vw mod you can start low and ensure you don't burn the coil out; I dryburn by protank coils at 3 watts.

I'm definitley leaning to getting a RBA, likely the taifun. with the Kanthal wire can you get it get it hot enough with a lighter or do I actually have to buy a small torch?

You can use a lighter. With gennies I generally torch the mesh and use a lighter on the wire because it's easier than lighting the torch.

I like to heat the wire before bending because it softens it so it's not as springy. But if that doesn't bother you getting red hot on the mod would clean it as much as fire does.

If you're going out to buy lighters special it might be just as cheap to get a small torch as a pack of lighters.

Haven't done it all that much, but I use a cigar lighter. It's made to stay lit for long(er) periods of time and is refillable. Both of mine also have very narrow flames. They were cheap, sue me.
