I have been using a ZAU for about a month now with no problems. This week I got a IGO L dripper. I love the flavor that I get with it but the throat hit is intense. I have it set up with cotton wick 32 gauge kanthal 5-6 wraps reading 1.5 ish ohms. The air hole is lined up with the wick and I am getting plenty of vapor, just too much kick.

So the question is will drilling out a larger air hole mellow the throat hit? I don't want to start drilling on this if it isn't going to improve the performance to what I want. Or should I PIF to my brother and get a different rda? If so what are some suggestions for a slightly cooler less harsh vape?

any input would be awesome.

Drilling out the hole is a common practice on the Igo L. Larger hole will provide more vapor and will smooth out the bite as well. As a note in SAE sizes the most likely convenient one you will have will be a 1/16th, this will be at the top end of a reasonably sized hole. If you have access to micro drillbits try 1.2 or 1.3 to start, but also don't be too afraid of that 1/16th, that works out to be around 1.58mm if I recall and is definitely a different type of draw to get used to, but once you are.. you might be hooked. Way more control over your hit as slowing and speeding up does not meet with much resistance like it does with the 1mm ish sized common holes so you do draw softer overall.

As a tip on drilling it out... make sure you secure that cap well, if the bit bites into it, that cap may bite you back. Also slow speed on the drill and if you have it, drip some oil down the bit into the hole to start (really doesn't matter what kind, I've heard of everything from machine oil to vegetable oil used) just wash it after, and the Igo should be really easy to drill through and not hurt your bits. On the other hand, run a full speed drill and press hard into SS and you are likely to heat up and wear down that bit.

Give it a try, worst case you refill the hole with JB weld and there are many ways to leave a little hole in it then. ;) 'course your Brother may think otherwise and rather I say... try something else!

There are so many out there, the Igo L has a great following, my buddy has one. I have used a couple of the early Phoenix models (there are several using that name now) those tend to be a bit small but fit an ego size well, just not tons of room to build, but they are decent. Later RBA's have been called a phoenix that vary quite a bit. The most interesting two I saw were referred to as the v4 and the v5 in places but may be hard to track down. There is an actual RBA called the 'RDA' which you can find at discountvapers.com along with a lot of other items. The actual RDA has an odd air hole that is small but I drilled a proper top air hole in mine and it works great. The Phoenix v4 was an RDA with the air hole corrected, different screws and a ....ty prebuilt coil, but the device looks pretty promising. Same layout as the RDA, same look, Better air (my opinion). And the Phoenix v5 I saw in a coop on FB, it looked like the RDA and Dream dripping atty had a baby. Basically looks like an RDA with an adjustable air hole screw part.

The RDA is a step up from the Phoenix when it comes to area to work in, it is smaller than the Igo L though. All of the ones I have mentioned are under 10 bucks a piece typically so... try a couple~!

If your normal vape is 24mg I'd highly suggest trying the IGO-L at 12-18. That's partly why it's so harsh.

Another step as mentioned above is the 1/16th drilled air hole. I love it, all my devices have the same size hole. It'll take a day or two to get used to.

Something else that may or may not help- I run my IGO on a bigger mod, a Vamo or a Natural. With the bigger mods you can get away with thicker wire that won't be as fragile. You might want to consider 30AWG Kanthal for your coils, use the same wrap you have now and shoot for the neighborhood of 1.2-1.4 ohms. It'll respond fairly fast and generate a bit more plumes of vape. I only use 32AWG on my IGO-S and probably for an A7 I've been eyeballin' but that's because it's for an EGO and anything under 32 won't dry burn properly.

One last tip, with a little badass like an IGO or any other bigger rebuildable, move up to at least 50% VG. Personally I run 75% VG. That'll tone down the throat hit and help generate gigantic and very satsifying "holy $%@#" clouds of vapor. Always fun at parties!

Best of luck and enjoy the IGO. It's one of my favorites.
