just got the stumpy and really liking it, there is something about center builds that carry the vapor directly into the mouth without bouncing or turning anywhere. it gives a really intense flavor even though the airholes are farther away.

it's still too soon to tell but I think this coil configuration because of what I said above will keep the wick cleaner for a longer time as there must be less condensation inside the chamber

Where do you have the holes lined up? I used to put mine in back of the posts.

Been really thinking about buying one, nice first impression write up. Can you compare this to any other flavor atties you own? I love my origen, ology, Marquis and thump and have been trying to decide between this, a 454 v2 and a manta v2.

I'm kind of weird here, as my most flavorful rdas are the rogue and the vertex junior...
I find it better than the hobo v3 and my quasar which used to be the best for me. I can't remember on the origen as the last time I used was at least a year

if the posts where the 12 and 6 on a clock then the holes are at 11 and 5. hitting almost perpendicular, I would've done the same as you if I had it fully open

Get a Stumpy.
Finally got one. For me, it's what I expected - the same vape experience as a Derringer just easier to build on and slightly less leaky thanks to the air slot being a bit higher.

Editing for clarity: The point isn't to be negative about the Stumpy rather that it's a great vape but I, personally, don't find it to be any better or worse than the Derringer. The airflow is about the same, the flavor is about the same. You can't go wrong with either atty but after using both I'm struggling to understand why the Stumpy is supposed to be so much better. The two attys are virtually identical other than the Stumpy having a two post deck and aesthetic differences. If someone didn't have a Derringer and was trying to decide between it and the Stumpy I'd probably recommend the Stumpy because of the two post deck. If someone had a Derringer already and inquired about the Stumpy I'd probably tell them not to bother as he/she would be getting a very similar vape experience.

I've had the Stumpy for about a month or so and I'm a big fan. That 2 post deck is the jam.

Hmmm...Hell, those two are so different I can't say one would replace another. But if you can get a Manta v2, you may want ti while you still can. The Big Block will still be there and likely drop a little bit in price despite how much of a solid and underrated little atty I think it is.

Flavor, for me, was much better out of a Stumpy (rockin' the same build). I get more airflow, not meaning "more" per se, but freer airflow (if that makes sense?) and that is what made it taste better (to me). I also got less spit-back from the Stumpy, but with more space/options for building (for coils and wicking and juice) you can adjust for tweaks like that.

If someone has a Stumpy and not a Derringer, I 'd tell them there was not much to be gained (aside from aesthetic differences) to buy a Derringer, but if someone owned a Derringer and liked it, I'd recommend a Stumpy for the options it has, which will offer different vape experiences. I had a Stumpy first and getting a Derringer after that was what to me felt like a backwards move. You can make a Stumpy do what a Derringer can do, but you can't make a Derringer do all that a Stumpy can.

Edit: but even with my position, we can see here that you would've been directed wrong. So it always depends. I do recommend you try that in-between posts build though (if you haven't).

Does anybody know if you can phone in an order to FastTech? I see they carry pre-made Clapton coils. I could just order it online, but I don't really need any. I just want to phone in the order for the "Who's on First" effect.

Ring Ring....
Herro, Fasttech..
Hello. I would like to order a roll of Clapton Coil?
Yes, Crapton
No,No.. just one roll....
Yes, Crapton....
No. I just want the one roll....

(time for someone to take offense of my laughing at Chingrish)

Oh, about the Manta v2 vs the Orgien...I thought about it and I think the Origen gives a deeper, more robust and smooth flavor and the Manta v2 can give a more crisp and clear flavor. Their both quite capable in the flavor department, but it's like comparing an Escher and a Rembrandt.

Nice detailed comparison, thanks for this. After everything that was said about the stumpy on here, I will probably end up getting a manta because that thing is so sexy!

Well, I try not to focus on that aspect in my assessment, but the truth is it's effin' stunning! I won't post it again, but did you see it on my Jkuro mod? Man, the sad part is one day that atty will be all sold out everywhere. It's pricey as hell though...but as I said yesterday I think, I would not trade it for what it costs retail and I got a deal on mine.

Edit: when you search for it, search hard and you'll find the price range can be wide, but when the price drops on them (which they most likely will if the units aren't moving), they will sell lickity split!

I get just as much spitback from the Stumpy as the Derringer. Or the Dinghy or any other tiny atty I've used. I think it's just the nature of the design. As to the building options, I agree that you can fit much bigger builds in the Stumpy but I'm not sure how that would help with spitback. I don't use Claptons or anything like that but from what I've read they just lead to even more spitback.

I also used identical builds in both attys (same juice as well) and found no real discernible difference in flavor. Other than providing an easier platform to install big builds, I'm not sure what else the Stumpy offers that the Derringer doesn't.

Haven't tried the in between posts build, maybe I'll give it a go later tonight.

Not just big builds, but more types of builds because of more room and a lack of a center post. And that one thing opens the door to other things and, to me, that ends up being a big difference---of course, if I only ran the same build on both, it wouldn't be enough of a difference to write home about. I guess that is the crux of it though. If you want to build the Stumpy like you do the Derringer, there wouldn't be much point unless you were keen on a deeper well and an easier build, which, for just those two things, is enough of a reason for some.

As to why I get less spit-back for the Stumpy over the Derringer, I dunno. I do tend to think that dual-post deigns are more efficient for wicking since there is more of an unobstructed channel for liquid to flow (bro science here, not peer reviewed research. LOL). And I didn't say it was about bigger coils that helped in that arena, just that you have more room to tweak your builds and try various things because there is more room to play with. I do think though that if approaching one atty and another with the exact same build that you will likely get a similar vape experience, after all, builds are very much a part of the flavor experience.

For sure though, try that in-between posts build. Of course to much hype always ruins it though. LOL

p.s. I never had a larger problem with spitback and Claptons, just about the same as normal. It's other factors like resistance to power, coil placement, wicking, over-dripping and whatnot (AFAIC). I do hate spitback though!

Definitely try out the in-between posts build. It's the only one I rock anymore on the Stumpy

I think this is the key.
it's hard to compare a corvette to a minivan if you drive it exactly the same.

for the stumpy to shine over the derringer you have to build for it, that means doing what you can't do on the derringer, so for some it will be the same either one and for some there is a huge difference.
I love a single massive coil so the stumpy is everything the derringer isn't

Yeah, it became 'the' build for that atty! When I first talked to the owner about my build, he was rockin' his the exact same way too (damn near the EXACT same build). We had a laugh about it because I thought I was clever. LOL

This is of course my opinion, but if he were to be comparing the 2 which I assume he is since those are the 2 in question you would want to build the same, wick the same and have the same juice. IF comparing across the board for the 2, it makes sense. I'm not gonna throw a completely different build on a derringer then have a different build on the stumpy, you'd have 2 completely different outcomes and you wouldn't be able to really compare the 2 at all. I sold my derringer and always wanted a stumpy only cause it was small and it was a 2 post, other then that 2 post though your comparing damn near the same rda. However from what I've seen 2 post rda's really shine with that in between coil, it's by far my favorite. I would try that as was mentioned above.
