Rebuilding Protanks

Ok so after a month with both my protanks and heavy use, i think its time to rebuild the heads. I was gonna buy new ones but i'm about to get into rba's so i just decided that i'm just gonna buy all the wicks and wire and rebuild the protank too. Which type of wicks and gauges of wires are you guys, the one that are rebuilding protanks, using.

30g nichrome and 2mm silica, then a 2mm slica ontop of the coil. 4 wraps, came to 2.2ohms, the long legs add resistance. works better than the stock heads, still a battle between to dry and to wet though.

I use 32g and wrap 4 times also, on a 2 mm silica, but i unravel the 2mm silica and use 2 strans, instead of the whole wick on top of the coil. no dry hits or wet hit. Good luck

I use 32g Kanthal at 5 wraps on 2mm silica with a piece of 1mm silica on top. This gives me about 2.4ohms.

I use 3mm and two small pieces as wicks. On another thread about rebuilding the protank some guys are suggesting using 3.5-4mm worth of wick and no flavor wicks and they are getting better flavor. I'm trying that next.

I use 32 gauge kanthal A1.

For silica I use pbdragon. It's the best quality I have ever tried. Highly recommended.

4x1mm silica with 6 wraps (when viewed from the top) of Kanthal D 32 AWG here - ends up at about 2.3-2.5 Ohms.

thanks guys for the link. I saw that thread and was trying to look for it again but it didn't come out on my search for some reason. I'll go lurk over there and ask questions.

The coils seem pretty durable so I rewick with 1.5mm of cotton every 2 weeks or so, after dryburning the empty coil.
I had to lay 2 strands of a 4 strand 1mm cotton wick(1/2mm) on top of the coil to stop some seepage.

Did this the second day of ownership. Like 'em even better now.YMMV.

I started out rebuilding them the same way with 4 pieces of 1mm silica. Then I went to 2 pieces of 2mm and finally settled on 1 piece of 2mm silica. It was all trial and error till I found what I liked best. I think it's interesting to see how everyone does it differently and gets different results.

I get different results 34 ga 3/2 wrap 2.0 ohms 2.5 silica wick no flavor wicks

i dont know what kind of wick that they use on the protanks but i'm trying to stay away from that. when i dried burn after a wash and rinse i burnt one of the head and cant seem to get the taste out.

Drop it in a little vodka for a couple min it gets rid of the dry burn taste

Same as above basically, though I use cotton wick. Just slip out the old wick, burn the coil, and slip in a new one. No need to waste a perfectly fine coil

Sometimes the burnt taste is caused by a burnt rubber grommet inside.

I've circumcised two grommets and they work perfect.

I am using square braid cotton wicks with 32 ga kanthal. No flavor wicks. Same setup in my Evods.

what does it mean to circumcise a grommet and do i need a rabbi?

what do you mean by "flavor wick"?
