Rebuilt coils still tasting funny...

So I went and built another coil, this time before in installed it into the base piece i hit it with the propane torch, it turned a wierd brown color, so i hit it some more and it started to smoke and glow red, now its back white again but its pretty hard to the touch...the funky taste is deffinately not as bad now, but is still there...whats worse is that there is almost NO flavor even though vapor production is great...i'm stumped...i dry fired it in the head before putting the top cap back on, and no matter how long you hold it the red never goes down the legs...thats good right?

As long as the coils glows and the legs do not - Yes.

I figured it out. Soak in Scotch.
Once you have soaked in enough Scotch - nothing will taste funny:D

A you are using fresh juice each test, right?
No old juice was dumped back into bottle, right?
You have tested the Same bottle in something else?
You have tried a different juice with a Fresh/clean setup, right?

if it were a hot leg how do i fix it???

Double up the wire on the legs, particularly the positive one. Just double it over and twist it around itself. The two strands of wire have 1/2 the resistance (thus don't heat as much). The current basically has an easy ride to the coils where it gets restricted/hot.

Check with meter before use.

Excellent idea!

There are some devices I've stayed away from due to needing a NR-R-NR build. I'd bet your idea would work great on those. And to stop hot legs on clearo-style heads.

How about this... Go buy/order a batch of coil head replacements, and try one.

No funky flavor means it's something in your materials.

Funky flavor means it's absolutely in the juice, or the tank is contaminated beyond repair.

I have a clearo that I can no longer use. I put a juice in it that just won't ever let me forget it was in there. Nothing works. No amount of cleaning, soaking or dry burning works.

Edit: Dangit, power went out during a rough T-storm. Great to hear that the problem has been solved, and great to hear that the juice ain't gonna get dumped. That's sooo tragic.

so to sum up what happened here, you had a hot leg and you doubled the wire at the legs to fix the problem? I've never had that problem but I have had problems with stock coils burning juice without changing anything. interesting. how many coils is 3ohm for you? what size wick are you using, and I was going to suggest not soaking in rubbing alchohol, it just doesn't seem necessary. torch the wick to get rid of contaminants

Yeah, that wattage is a bit high too. I used to run between 7 and 9, closer to the 8 +/- side at 3.1 ohm coils (stock wire). The 30 ga or 32 ga may require the extra watts, but frankly I don't think it does. I'm running 32 ga right now and lower watts than that on silica wick.

EDIT: 4.6 ish volts at 2.8 ohms = 7.56 watts. I'm not 100% sure because I can't measure under load at the moment, but it's a preference thing and a YMMV thing anyway.

If it's working for ya, cool.

I like to run it as hot as i can before the performance starts to degrade....and i'm running 32 ga at 6 wraps around doubled over 2mm silica...i wrap my coil on a small drill bit (the part where it's solid) and then feed fishing line thru it and pull my double wick through it, then double the legs and twist them, then pass it in front of a propane torch until its clean, then install the coil into the head and do all necessary trimming, use 2 drops onto the coil before putting top cap on the head, then install and enjoy...the doubled over legs provides a very low resistance leg, so all the heat is at the top where you want it...if you are having the issue i'm having, this is well worth the extra time it takes to put on together...the fluid i'm using burns around 13 watts...but performance starts to go south around 10.5-11 watts, so most of the tim i'm at about 9.5
