Are you up to speed on battery safety, Ohm's Law, amp draw, etc.?

If not, I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. You are now 100% in control of your own safety (and others around you). Make sure you purchase an ohm reader and a voltmeter or DMM so you can measure your builds, check for shorts and measure the remaining charge on your batteries.

Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding mods and rebuildables are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

MECHANICAL MODS & REBUILDABLES

7. Information Resources for Your First RBA
* An essential read and reference guide for someone new to rebuilding coils. Includes a multitude of useful links on battery safety, mod safety, coil meters, coil building, and the differences in the three types of RBA's.

15. Inexpensive Mechanical Mod and RDA Setup
* A response to the frequently asked question on how to get into rebuildable atomizers with a mechanical mod inexpensively. Includes a list of commonly used tools and supplies for rebuilding and where to find them.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

yes, I am up to speed with battery safety. I use VTC 4's, which I picked up at my local smoke shop. I do have an ohm reader but I have yet to pick up a DMM. this purchase will be in the near future. but I will make sure to check out the blog. thank you for the help

I've really liked copper mechs, thanks to the typically low voltage drop. More bang for your buck, so to speak.
Keeping with the lack of voltage drop, I try to avoid telescopic, and multi-tube mods. Those features seem to add to the drop issue in my experience, however that could just me going crazy. :p If you only use 18650's, it's not really much of an issue for compatability.
Recessed/flush switches also top the list, I like to be able to set them down without having to lock them every time.

The Penny mod has been very good, and the Mutation X mod is very nice as well. The Mutation lacks a locking ring, but it's a recessed switch with a very long throw so I haven't had any pocket-firing.
The SMPL is also extremely efficient, but I should mention that hybrid style mods sometimes have an issue connecting to certain attys, so if you get a chance to handle one at a local store, make sure the pin is long enough.
If you do want the ability to switch between different battery sizes, the 4Nine is another good hybrid option.

Susan-S Battery safety, OHMs law, and battery safety information is awesome. However I do not recommend that you buy a mech mod without the help of a local shop. Most will at least give you information and help guide you. You can even purchase it online and bring it to them in the store to help you through your first build and setting it up. Remember that they make more money from liquid sales so if they provide you great customer service you obviously will want to come back.

On a side note I reccomend the apollo or a aluminum Manhattan

Just be careful with B&M's. Some are great, but I've seen plenty of horror stories here on ECF where someone can't figure out why their mech with a 0.2 ohm coil and trustfire battery is heating up... I never saw a mech in person before ordering one from Fasttech, but did heaps of research, and I haven't touched a regulated mod since. Just do your research, take it slow, be afraid of batteries, and you'll be fine :)

I second RandyF's recommendation of the SMPL. I honestly don't see buying any other kind of mech again; it's small, sleek, and it just works, simple as that. I've got a less-than-ideal fasttech clone, and it's still amazing.
