Thanks very much for your help. I'm seriously considering one of these joyetech Evic Primo Minis:
Joyetech™ eVic Primo Mini Starter Kit (w/ ProCore Aries) - Vapor Authority

That is a decent mod and not expensive but the tank on that is definitely not MTL vape tank. I have had a couple of those that I got clearance priced from China. Some people like the mod a lot.

Even though you don't use TC for vaping, you might want to look at a DNA chipset 75W box as they can be found cheap and are excellent.

The JAC has a few long threads on here is well liked.

JAC Vapour Series-B DNA 75w

There is a Kanger DNA 75 Clearance for $70 with free shipping here. Great small mod with DNA chip

Kanger K1 Stabilized Wood DNA 75 Mod **CLEARANCE**

When I go to buy batteries and a charger, how do I know whether to get the regular batteries or the flat top batteries?

I don't see that anywhere in the specs on any of the mods that I've looked at so far. All I see is the battery type like 18650, for example but those come in both configurations. How do I know which ones to buy?
Mooch's Blog is the go-to source on vape batteries. A couple more blogs that may be of help.

Battery Basics for Mods: The Definative Battery Guide for Vaping
  • A popular and essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.
Guide to Choosing a Li-ion Battery Charger

  • Guide to help a novice in choosing a charger. Covers recommended brands, suggestions for the number of charging bays you'll need, independent bays, LED or LCD models, and "smart chargers".
When choosing a battery for a regulated mod, pay particular attention to the brand and the model's specifications, in particular the "amp rating" (maximum continuous discharge rate) and the capacity (mAh rating). Preferred brand names are Lg, Samsung, Sanyo, and Sony. Choose the battery that will supply the wattage needed for the wattage settings that you will vape.

You don't need a 30 amp battery if you'll only be vaping at 30 watts. A 15 amp battery will do just fine supplying the wattage you'll need, and you'll get more run time per charge with 3000 mAh than just the 1500 mAh of a 30 amp battery.

Innokin Oceanus. It's not an internal battery mod... Uses a 20700. But the 20700 is 3000 mAh, and the kit comes with 2 of 'em. It'll go down to around 7 watts and up to 100. Not much bigger around than the iStick, but taller.

Sent from my LG-H931 using Tapatalk

I find the battery life on my Oceanus (and I am an Innokin fan) not that good. Your mileage may vary

Innokin Coolfire Ultra 4000mah, good size and very reliable. I gave up on all the batteries and chargers a while back now. I now just buy a new mod every 2 years or so which keeps me up to date as well.

This is an excellent choice, good form/size, and excellent battery life.

Man, am I glad I started this thread! I was completely clueless about the batteries and you folks have been incredibly helpful. I read through all the links and blogs and I'm pretty confident that I understand things now.

I couldn't find the mod that I wanted for sale by itself so I got the kit.

I went ahead and made a purchase for the three items in these links. Did I do OK? (serious question)

Mod:
Joyetech™ eVic Primo Mini Starter Kit (w/ ProCore Aries) - Vapor Authority
Batteries (I bought two):
Samsung™ 25R 18650 INR 2500mAh 20A Flat Top Battery
Charger:
Nitecore™ Sysmax Intellicharge i2 2-Channel Smart Battery Charger

Yes. Hopefully you purchased more than just one battery.

Rotating more than one battery will extend the overall life expectancy of your batteries. Also, should your first battery become drained while vaping, having a charged spare will allow you to continue to vape uninterrupted.

Thanks Baditude! I didn't get the 4500mah that I originally wanted but I think I'll be satisfied with the mod as it's pretty close to the same size as the Eleaf I've been using. I have a pocket on the right side leg of my jeans that I like to carry my mod in. The pocket is only 1 3/4 inches wide which is why I wanted to stay with the same basic size.

I did get two batteries.

You can get the eLeaf iStick iPower 80 W for a very good price.

It has a single cell inside, of 5000 mA/h capacity.

Vaping at your same power, it lasts me more than two days.
It is slightly wider than your iStick 30 W, but it is totally worth the effort.

There aren't many internal battery mods the size of the iStick you have. If you venture in cheap, no-brand mods territory, you risk getting a mod with a cheap USB port.

A good micro USB port (made of fiberglass loaded nylon and phosphorus bronze) like the type used on smartphones, is rated from 10K to 100K reciprocations, while cheap ones may last 50 to 100 reciprocations, bricking the mod after a month of use.
