like a lot of folks i rewick often (personally once a day after 6ml - 9ml. i'm still trying to figure out how to make my wicks last longer and i have rayon on the way)

my routine is:
1. remove old wick
2. dry burn with about 5 pulses
3. rinse atomizer and top cap with tap water
4. dry atomizer and top cap
5. rewick
6. profit

is there a better way? i considered using a toothbrush on the coil while rinsing it but not sure if it's a good idea as it might get rid of the alumina layer on the kanthal....

I am not sure 5 pulses would be enough to clean the coil. How long are your pulses? I know mine take quite a few more. That might be due to my wicking though. I personally use Ready_X_Wick in all my atty's and dry burn with the wick in place. I have 2 atty's in daily use right now that have had the same wick in them for 3+ months now and they still clean up nicely with a dry burn and taste is still outstanding...

Your routine is about the same as mine, you dont need the toothbrush to clean the coil imo, pulse the coil till it glows and blow it cool again, you'll see it 'clean' its self. Rise under hot water, semi dry with paper towel and then pulse dry burn the coil. Rewick, sqounk and be awesome.

I do what ckquatt does with the coil being wet first. Also what do you consider pulses? 1 second? I get my coils glowing 4-5 times. However I'm running unflavored, I can easily get 2-3 weeks out of cotton and it'll still look brand new with no burns in it. That's going through about 9ml's a day.

I don't rinse my coils with water. After I remove the old wick and dry burn the coils a couple times, I brush the coils lightly, inside and out, with a Dentek brush. They look like miniature bottle brushes. You can find them in the tooth care aisle at the drug store.

my pulses are about 1 or 2 seconds on "bright orange" heat. ie. glowing

@ckquatt , i'm gonna try that. i do pulse after rinsing just before rewicking but only after the coils are mostly dry.

@dbrandt01, honestly it's just voodoo to me how people get so much time from their wicks. even if i do hint of flavour i get max 9mls before needing to rewick. i pull the wick before it starts scorching. after 9ml there are tiny burn marks where the cotton touches the coil.... not too bad but it would be bad after >9ml.

I've never really kept track of how many mls I get on a wick; but it can be several bottle fills. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I no longer vape any real coil gunkers. Most of the time, I'm vaping either unflavored, or very lightly flavored DIY. Prematurely scorching wicks can also have to do with the amount of cotton you are using. Too much cotton can scorch the cotton, because if it's too tight in the coil, it will compress the cotton and choke off the juice. Too little cotton, and the wick may not hold enough juice for the duration of your draws. It takes a bit of experimentation to get the proper density of the wick to suit your builds and vaping style.

believe me i've experimented. thin but fluffy enough wicks which are always wet with juice, reasonably short draws (around 3 or 4 seconds), not too much chain vaping, very lightly flavored juice.... still can't get past 9ml.

regarding RxW.... i've tried it, don't really like it. maybe i'll try it again one day. hopefully Rayon will save the day and give me a few more mls. i may be deviating from this post's original theme though :).

I get about a week with a fresh KGD wick using many different flavours in many atties. That seems to be about the threshold for gunking problems, and I use the dry burn (4 or 5 2 second pulses) and rinse technique.

Scorched wicks are a thing of the past now that I'm comfortable in knowing how much to use and build to match draw style. Too much material, and the wick gets choked, dries out and burns. Same thing with too long a draw for the setup. Taking a 4 second hit on a small diameter low ohm dual setup will use up all the juice in the wicks pretty quickly - larger diameter coils, and thus more juice capacity in the wicks, solves the problem.

I also find that with MTL vaping, it's easier to gauge wick dryness than with direct lung inhaling. I find I can stop the inhale and save the wick any time I mismanage the wick saturation. When DL'ing, you're pretty much committed.

I left RXW, too. I mention it only for its for durability. I use rayon for rebuilding, for me, it works.

I swap wicking about once per 6ml's. I rinse, dry burn till the coils are clean then rinse any specks of debris out of the juice well. Then dry burn one more time to dry the coils. I've been using KGD, Shisedo (I know I spelled that wrong) and lately I'm trying Native Wick. I like all three. My juices gunk up my coils long before my wicking is due to be changed but I love my juices so it's not a prob for me.

I was using RxW exclusively but after taking a break from it to try KGD for a while I found that when I tried to go back I'm getting a taste from the RxW that I had never noticed before and now don't like it. I've got a ton of it too. I'm gonna give it one more go before I make a permanent decision on whether or not to keep my stash.

When rewicking, an exercise I perform when I feel like it not because I need to, I don't even let my coils glow anymore. I gently pulse and blow on the coils at the same time. My goal is to dry the juice out - that's all.

My interval is prolly anywhere from a week to 2 weeks or thereabouts.

I am running just nic base in nearly 100% VG and use either Native Wicks cotton or KGD cotton. I've been diggin the Native Wicks ATM but that could change and I get a hair to use KGD again then back to native.

My goal is to disturb the coil as little as possible from the time I make it to the time I pull it.

Huh, weird. Im getting somewhere in the 2 to 3 week range with japanese organic cotton on .4- .6 ohm dual coils. 100% vg 10 mg nic.

Plewm, what atty are you using? I dont mean to be that guy, but are you sure youre squonking often enough?
Reomizer 2 with stock air hole. 2.5mm and 27g at about 0.9/1.0 ohm. kgd thin enough to slide easily, thick enough to be making contact with the coil, and short enough that it's just touching the deck. maybe it's the small air hole that isn't cooling the coil/wick down enough. i squonk habitually almost after every hit or two.

i created a thread about this a few weeks ago somewhere else on ECF and with all the info i got from that thread i still haven't found out the problem.

it's actually improved slightly.... i can get about 12ml, but after that the juice gets dark in the bottle and taste starts to suffer, so i pull le wick.
