All true, I just like to error on the side of caution when throwing stuff out there that I know other people are going to build. Personally, I am vaping a 30 watt 7 amp .6ohm dual coil on a mechanical mod with no fuses or any protection other that what AW provides internally, so I get where you are coming from ;) I would be curious as to the current draw for the charging without the resistor though, I can't remember right now but I seem to recall it was going to be at least 1 amp possibly 2 amps peak. While an 18650 of any brand can easily handle that, if you were powering this box with say an old 350mA 12v power supply you had laying around you might run into the internal protection of that device.

The reality is that there are probably 50 ways to build a welder now that we all understand the basic parameters of the design, a month ago that was not really the case because we had not collectively put our minds together. The design I outlined and put up the schematic and BOM for works perfectly, provided you don't start removing things or switching stuff around without understanding what does what. I got most of the parts for the second welder today and am planning on putting a step by step for it on instructables for the people who asked for it, if it is followed step by step it will give anyone a perfectly functioning machine for exactly $25 and less than 1 hour of work. There is nothing wrong with doing it a different way, just some folks like simple to follow directions without having to over think it :)

Looking forward to the guide!!!!

I remember seeing the GG thread were this welder showed up and I was dying to get one. I've tried to read through this thread but I'm way out of my league here. So I'm commenting mostly to subscribe in anticipation of the dummies guide to this. But I would like to throw out there that this really could be an awesome idea for a coop. Or if somebody just wants to make and sell some I would definitely be interested and I imagine dozens if not hundreds of other people would too.

I ordered the same one as you got - hasn't arrived yet. I think that the depth is a little less than the 60V model, due to the on-board caps being smaller.

Maybe. I can't tell the cap value in the 60v photo. Anyway it's just sitting on my bench. If I wasn't getting good welds with the Spark-O-Matic, I would have built one with the converter module. Maybe I'll play with it some other time.

After reflowing the solder on the display pins everything is happy....looks close to my other cheap meter.

Ok I need help...I think I fried one of my lm2577's trying to be fancy. In the pic there is a 10k thumb wheel pot I got from radio shack (they show a picture of it on their website but don't list it and I can't find any info on it) I looked up the pot that was on the board and I believe it was a 10k......anyway it seemed to work fine until I go beeboping the thumb wheel right past 36v to idk it was fast and i wasn't really paying to much attention but like 50-60v and then I heard a pop so i killed the power and then smelled a little bit of electronic unhappyness but not real bad. But the SS34 thing I'm pointing to in the pic is hotter the hot. I swaped the old pot back on....but no joy.

So I have two questions.....
- Why did it happen?
- Does anyone have any suggestions for possibly fixing it? There is a good chance I have every component on the board at work or something similar if anybody has any suggestions.

Good thing I bought two, and the other one will keep the pot that's on it until I figure out what I need :D

Thanks

If you are a glass half full type a guy, then sure :)

Ummm thanks....I'm guessing by your comments you don't have any thoughts why the other 10k pot did that and then possibly just googled SS34

Maybe the 35v caps??? ill try replacing those with some off a broken RC speed controller. If not them then ill just add it to spare parts bin.
