Thanks for all the tips guys! I just rebuilt a few old heads and one new head with cotton balls. Now the Protank has a great vape. Has a tighter draw and the nasty silica taste is gone. I had given up on the Protank and went to cartotanks, but now she's back on my eVic.

Now I just need to order some kanthal wire and build some low resistance coils for my new mech (if it ever ships from fasttech).

I just tried this. I must say it works pretty good. It took me a few tries to get it right. At first I was using wayyy too much cotton. I had some fat, impressive looking wicks. But they didn't vape well and it was stretching the coil out. So I finally mounted the coil in the base first and oxidized it really well. Then just a fraction of the cotton I started with. Seems pretty good now. I am not getting any bad taste at all but the flavor seems slightly muted from the square braid cotton wicks I have been using. I think it will get better after an hour or so, definitely has potential to be my new method.

Thanks for the tips!

Well, as my Protank heads get spent, and they seem to be out of stock almost everywhere, I decided to parlay some of my iGo-L rebuilding materials on a quest to get a better vape out of my Protanks.

I've tried several silica styles (single, double, tripled, with or without 'flavor wicks') and 400 mesh SS, but I think I hit the mother lode when I tried a cotton ball, on a lark.

I wound the coil out of 33awg Kanthal on a round toothpick, with a 3/2 wind for 1.9 ohms, then took a tuft of the cotton ball, rolled it into a wick, and threaded the tapered end through the coil.

Then I reassembled the head like normal, though after the first time I found it beneficial to prime the wick, like you would a carto tank, before you put the top piece back on the head, or you'll get quite a few harsh hits before the liquid works its way into the wick.

I must say that the vape is out of this world. On my original Protank heads, any wattage over about 6.7W tasted burnt to me, but I'm now vaping at a full 8.0W, getting a very nice consistent crackle, and a load of vapor. I'll have to be extra careful not to burn the wick, but I'm really enjoying the vape. Plus, it's cheap to replace if I do, so that's another win.

Just wanted to toss this out there in case anybody else has been toying with this idea.

I've been using 100% cotton yarn from Michaels. $2.00 for a lifetime supply. Boil 10ft. At a time in water for 20- 30 minutes. Squeez dry , wrap in a napkin and let dry completely ( 1 to 2 hours. )
Wick works great. More E juice taste.
Oh yeah,,,,,23 days without a cigarette since I got my first setup.

Cotton I would say is the best flavor you can ever get but don't ever dry burn it. Nastiest flavor you'll ever have the misfortune of tasting.

Also Michael's sells 50%/50% Cotton/Hemp 100% bio-degradable yarn by Martha Stewart. That woman gives me the chills but man is that stuff awesome for vaping after a good boil.

I haven't tried a Protank yet but have been oogling over them for a while now. After reading this post... I'm going for it. I have been re-wicking my vivi tanks for a couple of weeks now using cotton candle wick. Seems to work pretty well. I have noticed that I go through a re-wicked head in a matter of a week or two, but as was said before "Oh well!" It's really cheap and easy to rebuild plus I can transfer that old compulsive smoking habit into tinkering.

FYI I read that some of you are using toothpicks to make your coil. I learned a tip the other day from another post; you can use a 1.5 or 2 mm fine course screw to wind your coil. Look for a longer screw so that you have more screw to hold on to while you wind. It makes a really tight and neat looking coil. It took a couple of tries till I got it right but looks like a pro job.

Use a #40 machine screw (any hardware store)... start by wrapping it out away from you, and then pulling under and
back up toward you, repeat as many wraps as you need and you'll get a perfect wrap.
It's more natural to wrap aiming outwards to start, but you get a better wrap doing it backass wards !
Temper it, unscrew it, and you've got the cutest little coil you've ever seen.

here is my problem.
I have been rewicking DID, Mini Nova, Nova, evod, MT3 atomizers with cotton balls. I managed to get good wick twice on Nova, which lasted for week. Tried rolling the wick tight and not tight.
The materials used - 32 kanthal, 4/5 thread on Allen key from DID (1.9 Ohm resistance), Squeeze the cotton ball into coil.
Protank, leaks without extra flavor wick on top of the coil. On all other atomizers the wick gives good flavor and vapor only for like half an hour. On DID the taste was good for couple days always, but the vapor production was dropping rather quickly.
liquid - 50/50, dark and light ones.
What am i doing wrong? Any suggestions?

How do you make a cotton ball into a vertical wick like the DID or genesis style RBA's? I thought only SS would work well on those because its stiff...

I rebuilt my protank head with 5 wraps of 32 kanthal over 1 strand of the peaches and cream yarn (I used a straightened out paperclip held with the yarn to stabilize as I hand wrapped). Then I split a second bit of yarn into just 2 of the plys (it is a 4 ply yarn) and used those as flavor wicks. I think next time I will try just ONE ply as a flavor wick as getting the cap back on was a bit of a squeeze.

Clouds of vapor. No funny taste. 1.9 ohm is what mine came out at.

Love it!

Some strings, yarns or [candle] wicks have what is called "sizing" incorporated into the material to aid in forming and retaining shape for said strings, yarns or wicks. This is the material that should be removed with boiling before use as an ecig wick.

USP / sterile 100% cotton should not need to be boiled; but then again, boiling isn't going to hurt anything. :)

Hi TomCatt,

Do you think I'd need to boil non sterile 100% cotton balls?

What would be the boiling procedure?

Thanks!

Cotton balls probably don't need to be boiled; but a typical boiling procedure is described in the Cotton Wick Wiki linked in my signature.

I had originally used the stock coil and just pulled out the silica then thread through the cotton ball wick but decided today to try wrapping my own coil.

Honestly it wasn't as hard as I thought... took about 5 min and that was with no knowledge and my first time! Did a 2/3 wrap on 32g kanthal and came out with a 1.2ohm coil, just letting the juice soak in before hitting it

Weird though... I tried testing the coil on my ProVari and it gave E1 error code but on the eVic it worked no issues... Any idea why?

Scrap that... its leaking badly... How did you stop the juice leaking out the hole under the coil?

Usually when I have leaking problems it is caused by not enough cotton to fill the wick holes in the head. Adding a loose piece on top may help, but usually kills performance for me and I just end up putting in a new wick. That is if it is just strait leaking, if it is gurgling from use then bumping up the voltage usually takes care of it. It vaporizes more juice and gives some killer hits. I tend to think of these wicks as some of my better ones since they put out clouds of vapor. :vapor:
