I thought this idea was going to be a waste of time but I just tried it after work. I am blown away. I have some RBAs that don't taste as good as this. Flavor profile is so much deeper than mesh for me, and silica isn't even in the same ball park. Super easy, and best of all, super cheap (practically free with the Qtip method I just used).
On a VAMO, 4/3 wrapped around a 1/16th bit with 32 kanthal. Licked my fingers, pulled a slightly larger than coil ID lump off of Qtip (because there are a lot of air pockets when you pull it). Licked my fingers again and smushed into a rod-like shape with special attention at creating a tip on one end. I didn't roll it as someone earlier said not to, though I don't see why that would be a bad idea. Takes steady hands but once you get it through the coil, just snip sides or tuck around the main reservoir. Remember the wick will expand when full of liquid, so if it is slightly loose, that's fine. Prime the wick, place the metal cap back on the atomizer chamber followed by the grommet. Make sure the grommet is down snug to prevent leakage.
You will get some gurgles and very small pops but the vape on the way is mind blowing. I'm going to have to lower my nic %.
Thank you all for the tips. I am monitoring for the next several hours to make sure there are no leaks. With the slight gurgling, I am guessing there is a possibility of leaking but others have not reported it often so it might be 'just the way it works'.
