Hi all ... I've been through various coil configurations for my new REO the last couple days. Well... I keep getting a burned cotton taste. A bit larger than micro coil got me the longest few hours of use before I burnt it. Keeping it juiced is of course fairly easy but putting a new dollop of cotton is just a PITA every couple hours! One long hit and poof goes the cotton.
Ok... so don't take long hits... got it... but I like those huge hits from a genny.
So, I was rebuilding a Kraken this morning with ceramic wick and cut off the end so the cap would fit. I thought hum... that little end piece looked about right for this new RM2 I'm trying to adjust myself to. It was a little tedious to get a tight ribbon wrap and keep it that way while getting it inserted into the posts. Ok good enough for a first attempt ... checked ohms and it ended up at about 1.6. Hello long hits! To help it juice up faster and stay that way for a few hits, I put a dab of cotton on each end.
After several hours it's still going strong and totally recovers from a dry hit with a good squonk. The good news for me is that dreaded burned cotton taste hasn't happened yet! With the ceramic wick there's a flavor change to tell you it's getting dry and it doesn't taste nearly as bad as burned cotton.
Next time I might try the wick at an angle where one end touches down by the hole...

) would carve their own ceramic wicks. XC-132 is 1/32 ID and 1.5mm OD. The heat treating process only really requires about 7 minutes at a sustained temperature of . . . . about 700 celsius or 1250 farenheit. That's hard to do with a torch, since you can only really heat about 3/4" at a time, and you don't really know if you've hit the temp or gone way above it. Going way above temp for a short time causes it to disintegrate more readily.
