Hi all ... I've been through various coil configurations for my new REO the last couple days. Well... I keep getting a burned cotton taste. A bit larger than micro coil got me the longest few hours of use before I burnt it. Keeping it juiced is of course fairly easy but putting a new dollop of cotton is just a PITA every couple hours! One long hit and poof goes the cotton.

Ok... so don't take long hits... got it... but I like those huge hits from a genny.

So, I was rebuilding a Kraken this morning with ceramic wick and cut off the end so the cap would fit. I thought hum... that little end piece looked about right for this new RM2 I'm trying to adjust myself to. It was a little tedious to get a tight ribbon wrap and keep it that way while getting it inserted into the posts. Ok good enough for a first attempt ... checked ohms and it ended up at about 1.6. Hello long hits! To help it juice up faster and stay that way for a few hits, I put a dab of cotton on each end.

After several hours it's still going strong and totally recovers from a dry hit with a good squonk. The good news for me is that dreaded burned cotton taste hasn't happened yet! With the ceramic wick there's a flavor change to tell you it's getting dry and it doesn't taste nearly as bad as burned cotton.

Next time I might try the wick at an angle where one end touches down by the hole...

I've been using ceramic for a few weeks now, I like the fact it does not burn at all. I was getting frequent dry hits when I used a short ceramic wick like I would with cotton. Recently I've been making long tails that I tuck behind the posts after I screw on the top and it seems to be working very well.

That ceramic in the picture looks a lot like fish stix? Is it legit, or pet store variety? I ask because there was some nastiness associated with that variety.
I don't know fish stix ... I guess they could be, who knows? I'm thinking this was from a 3 pack out of one of my Kidney Puncher orders? What sort of nastiness do you speak of?

I've not tried that XC-132 and I'm certainly intrigued ...

What I can without doubt say right now is; this solid ceramic wick with cotton pickup ends has so far lasted longer than any attempt at cotton core wick I've tried. It works pretty good in a genny too but I still tend to prefer SS cable in those that don't give me trouble. For some reason that kraken and me just didn't get along with any SS wick styles that I've attempted.

I've tried to be open to cotton even with my mileage being so short lived ... works great until it burns! To be fair I've not been able to locate CVS rolled cotton locally, but not to fear as some should arrive this week.

What size for micro coils. 132 or 116
Dang... 1/32 is tiny ... might have to try it but so far the larger diameters give me a bit longer hit before burn taste.
I've tried 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8". Additionally tried a split coil for additional center wicking on both the 1/16 and 3/32 nails/bits because I burn'm up in one good hit.IMG_1755.jpg

I thought heat treated was the stuff safe for vaping; that heat cleaned was potentially unsafe?
My understanding is that this xc stuff needs to be heated at 1200+ degrees for ~12 hours? That's the only reason I haven't given the xc-132 a try yet - because I can only find heat cleaned.
If someone has the specs on this 132, I'd be really eager to give it a go.

I've been using the stuff from KP for a while now. They have a good selection. I torch it good to remove impurities and it's good to go. Their fish sticks are approved material. I believe they are the fish sticks but they are the right ones. I would link a thread to the AO but I'm mobile right now.

Yeah, so "fish-stix" is bubblestone, or airstone for fish tanks from PetCo. It's blueish in color. People (ahem . .) would carve their own ceramic wicks. XC-132 is 1/32 ID and 1.5mm OD. The heat treating process only really requires about 7 minutes at a sustained temperature of . . . . about 700 celsius or 1250 farenheit. That's hard to do with a torch, since you can only really heat about 3/4" at a time, and you don't really know if you've hit the temp or gone way above it. Going way above temp for a short time causes it to disintegrate more readily.

heat cleaned, kiln treated, heat treated . . . . whatever.

Ok ... sufficiently a bit freaked out about fish-stix, petco, baked, heated, washed, disintegration, etc... It did however work really well, so I might have to order the ceramic sticks from provape.
Trying ekowool into a ribbon coil now and while it doesn't seem to give a burnt taste, cotton has better flavor. Next up is a SS mesh.

I tried the Nextel XC ceramic (courtesy of my brother pdib) months ago.

Thought I liked it at first but just couldn't get comfortable vaping it because of the stuff it's treated with. Yeah, I know they were "kiln treating" it, but that statement and $1 wouldn't get me a kids hot chocolate at Starbucks :)

It also seemed to produce a "wetter" vape?

If you wanna try to improve your cotton vape, try to eliminate much of the cotton you have in the bowl cause it's obstructing feed / drain.

Also elevate and angle your coil slightly so it's higher on the side over the juice hole.

Here's a pic of what you are shooting for:

Thanks, great picture!

Oddly enough, last night I couldn't deal with the ekowool and didn't have time to mess with SS so I popped out a quick little coil & cotton wick (about 1.3ohm). And this morning upon comparing it to that one pictured, it's not much different (other than color of course).

Garage heater just got turned on and I'm about to attempt SS mesh. Will it be my last 2013 coil?
