Hmm, Russ.

The coil looks fine. I can assure you that MY 8 year old can't build better one without several "owies". But the coil diameter seems waay too big for that wick. Looks like the tops of the loops are not touching the wick. Do you get any burnt/metallic taste?

Also, I apologize for ragging on you. The original question was about taste and wicking, which has very little to do with coil

Oh yeah, it's way too big alright. Yes, prevalent metallic flavor too because of lack of contact, but over squonking will get one decent, non metallic hit. The wicking and workability are excellent. It's like a juice magnet. I also like that the ends don't seem to mushroom out once they get wet like cotton does. It seems to hold a nice tight shape well.

Additionally, for those who like to coil directly on the wick (silica style) the inside is hollow. I would cut me a nice, short length of wick (say 1/4" - 5/16") stick a needle tip juice bottle cap in the hollow part of the wick, wrap the wick with Kanthal, mount it on the rba then pull the mold.

I look very forward to a nice 1/16 coil on my rm2 tomorrow so I can put it thru its paces.

No worries Sergey, I know you ain't bagging on me bro! :)

Since i just got woken up by my SHCW calling me from italy (where its like morning already) and couldnt fall back to sleep, I came down and rocked the RM2 nextel xc-116 build. Initially, I used a 1/16" drill bit but I couldnt get the wick thru. can I also say how cumbersome I found using a drill bit compared to the blunt tip needles i recently started using? The drill bit is too long and heavy enough to pull the coil out of the holes if you take your hands off it, making it much more difficult to wind and place the coil. These needles have spoiled me. so here was plan B:

Most notable observation: Can you see how the wick was dry in the picture above? look how its already nearly completely saturated in the pic below. yep, it vacuumed up what was seemingly undetectable juice in the bowl. I havent even squonked it yet. Holy Shi t batman, that is amazing, and in the time it took to tuck the wick tail in and turn my camera back on. also, there was no cottonesque mushroom heads on the wick i just removed from the other RBA so that could only equate to more consistent and improved airflow and no droop down to the juice hole. Seems to hold its shape.

Furthermore, that was an easy build, just a little piece of wick on that needle, wrap it, mount it, pull the needle and get crazy with the cheeze wiz - Beck style. (remember that tool?)

In summary, a totally different type of build for me (wrapping on the wick), but very easy, nonetheless and will require a new coil with rewicking. But for a wick that should last nearly indefinitely (even if I only get 2 weeks of sick wicking and off the chain clean flavor) i'd say im sold. Is it possible that cottons fanman is gonna start routing for the new team in town? Well if this vapes as good as it builds, i'd say there's a damn good chance. :)

Really, really liking this Nextel. The flavor of the hits of unflavored nic base are amazing. After vaping since early AM, The wick looks EXACTLY the same as when I built it. I like it. It's been mentioned by others, but I'm reiterating that dry hits are not a punishment with this stuff either. Just a little warning shot whistling by your head that says squonk me big daddy, rather than a lung ripping cotton dry hit.

So, since I'm out whoring around on cotton (and since the 6"of this stuff that p-dibby gave me will last for many builds at 1/4" per build), I just ordered some ecowool from stormys vapor cellar (right here in GA) because I wanna see if its the same. The ecowool (Russia) website says it has similar properties to Nextel but safer chemistry. They even mention ecig users on their website. Buying direct would be costly though cause of their minimums quantities.

So, I thought me and cotton were lifelong mates. I can say that cotton has been very good to me, we'll always be friends and it has a very special place in my vape drawer - (it's not you cotton, it's me), but i guess I'm just a big time vapor Ho. :)

Edit, once the ecowool arrives, im'o do a little head to head comparo pitting the journeyman black wrinkle grand / RM2 / Nextel vs the new kid hammertone silver grand /RM2 /ecowool vs the unstoppable silver VV grand / chalice / cotton for a cage brawl.

Lets get ready to rumble :)

Reedit - thanks to ahreekeeteeke for informing us of the ecowool :)

RE Reedit - ecowool is $3.99 for 2 feet. thats like (90) 1/4" wicks + a little waste factor, so roughly 5 cents a wick that could (and probably would if i'd leave them alone) last weeks. I like it. :)

Too long and heavy? Perhaps it's time for a gym membership.

Thanks for the review Russ. I'm expecting my Nextel, 1/16 and 1/32" tomorrow and will try to do some experimenting. Couple questions for you buddy, you mentioned a hollow core.....it would be difficult to measure but would 30 or 32 gage wire be able to thread inside the ceramic? Thinking two possibilities here, to run a solid piece of wire inside this "tube" before wrapping to eliminate need for a mold. I may also try and leave the wire inside the Nextel and a long leg so positioning it along the RM2 floor will make it stay in place better. Hopefully that filling the Nextel will not impede its absorption properties.

I also will try and run cotton threads between this Nextel leg going around the RM2 bowl and its metal rim. This to increase the amount of juice supply being held to feed the wick. I love cotton also, but only for its absorption and flexibility. Once singed/burnt it produces bad vapes so I'll not have it touch or go near any of the coil wire. I should be able to get lotsa vapes per squonk and clean flavor in this setup, well hopefully, that is :). Btw, I also plan to pull back on the Nextel sleeve on the end of its leg and trim a bit of its wire core to fully insulate the wire along its full length. If I can get very thin silica it may be an option to replace the cotton, but for now my 2.5 silica is not flexible enough.

Keep us updated on further observations bro its been valuable info :)

P.S. You should be getting my vape mail any day now.

Norman, looking forward to the ribbon boss :)

As for measuring the hollow, they say its 1/32" on the Nextel website but I don't know how to measure the gauge. Just thinking out loud too, not sure you would get a good vape if you ran the wire / coil thru it cause it wouldn't get any air? Its fairly dense stuff. The idea is fascinating though - good one Nutzi :)

I'm really starting to lean towards ecowool though (expect a little return vape mail love next week) cause the latest controversy about the Nextel is the processing by the reseller to remove the harmful coatings put on it at the factory. Just hearing about that kind of stuff freaks this kid out. It's no secret that it has harmful stuff on it from the factory and it has to be properly removed by baking at high temps in ventilated kiln. Who's verifying that its properly cooked and toxin free? Not me. I'm not qualified

I'm curious to see what your ecowool from Stormy's will look like. I received the 3mm not too long ago...it is more like 5 or 6mm..too thick to use.

Do you have a linky to ecowool? I saw it somewhere, can't find it now :( And apparently my google-fu sucks

Commie, go to the Active CO-OP forum, there's an active thread for Ecowool, the first page of the thread tells all about it and I believe there's a manufacturer's link. We missed out on all the great prices.

From what I have read about ecowool and Nextel, the 1/32 for instance , is the inside diameter of the hollow part. The ropes we use for vaping are intended as sleeves to protect wires / conductors from high heat, that's why they specify the ID.

I hear ya Drifter on the verification thing......but I'm old and full of prescribed meds which will eventually kill me anyway .

Haven't had the chance to read up on Ecowool yet so I'll save comment on that one. You have a good one guy!!

I hear ya Norman, but the ONLY reason I quit smoking was for health reasons. We can't avoid the stuff in prescribed meds, but we can avoid harmful stuff that we vape. In my case, if there is any known risks that can be avoided, im avoiding em :)
