I'm wondering if anyone has ever used anything other than SS mesh as a wick on an RSST. I've been using it for several months now (500) with 28 - 30 guage Kanthal, and while I've gotten pretty darn good at making the wicks and coils, I've never felt really satisfied. I seem to get a metallic taste - which would stand to reason I guess. Just wondering if there might be another way, say ekowool or silica? Appreciate any input, maybe it's just time to move on to another rebuildable.

all I can say is if you get a metallic taste something still isnt right, or if on a mech probably too hot and running dry.
but
many people have use silica, ekowool, ceramic wicks and even cotton. and a couple of times people have used silica wrapped with the mesh.
with eko and silica you just stick it in the wickhole and wrap it like a mesh wick
My RSST is now pretty much set up as an auto dripper. I built a micro coil off the deck, connected it to the posts, and stuffed cotton through the middle and just a tiny bit into the hole. Now when I want to vape, I tip, let the cotton get soaked and vape. It's pretty much an RDA with a tank attached. It's pretty good flavor and vape.
When i do,or should say did my RSST,i was using ceramic rope as my wick for it.Wicks very well and the flavor is awesome.I stopped using mesh probably a year ago the reason being the only devices on the market were the DID's and there clones.Mesh was so hard to set up on these and fiddle with to get the coil right with no hot spots.I went to devices that were silica based and started using ceramic rope when i saw the first youtube vid on using it as a wick.I love it,i do every now and then use silica,i also still use bamboo,not to often though.
I have about 10 rebuildables and i have the same problem using mesh wicks,ill let friends try them and they dont taste the mesh at all but for me it kills the flavor of everything i use in them,i think some of us are just more sensitive to it then others,lately i have been using my mesh wicks with a single wrap of cotton (filler from inside a carto) to go between the wick and the coil,it seems to help a bit but you have to be sure to keep the wick nice and wet or you will burn the cotton.
Even better, watch a how-to. It's an AGA, but the method works for any genny, really. Once I get though this tank, I am swapping out the mesh for this style coil again... I tried it a month or so ago and it worked awesome.
I've been using mesh in genesis type devices for well over a year, But in that time, I've changed the way I prepare the wick. When I first started, I used to torch the heck out of the wick, before coiling, thinking I needed to do this to avoid hot spots; but I eventually found it to be counter-productive. The mesh became brittle, the taste was harsh, and the wicking ability wasn't as good as I'd hoped.
Eventually, I found that the less I do to the mesh, the better. I no longer torch it, either before rolling, or after. I cut my piece of mesh, roll it up to size, and slide it through my pre mounted coil. I put the device on a mechanical mod, and pulse the coil, until it evenly glows. It usually only takes a couple minutes to pulse oxidize a new wick. I get no harsh or metalic taste, and almost no break in time is needed.

I've been pulling apart cotton cheesecloth into threads and using it as a core for the ss mesh wick and as a wrap between the coil and the mesh with pretty great results. This vid shows the method pretty well. SS Mesh/Cotton hybrid wick - YouTube

I like my RSST, though sometimes I do have a bit of a problem with leaking along the center post (If you run into it, Google will yield various fixes), but other than that I have had no problems. Most of the time now I use ekowool, though I have also tried ceramic wicks. Frankly... No love. I really didn't find the vapor or taste any better than SS mesh, and in fact found them more frustrating. First off they're fragile as all get out, so if you do try them, keep that in mind; They break easy. I tried with both a fine wrap of cotton as well as on their own, and really wasn't all that impressed. Previously I used either a "tube" roll of SS mesh, or as CrimsonJack mentioned, I used either cheesecloth or a fine line of cotton or silica wick strands on the inside. But since buying a huge roll of ekowool and getting good micro coils with .30 kanthal, I haven't looked back, mainly because I use my RSST with really thick chocolate juices.

How are you using the ekowool? What size and how are you using it? I want to try it next.
