Hello,

I just received a Russian 91 rta in the mail. I am attempting my first coil build on it and I just had a quick question. Do the leads of the coil go to the posts from under the coil or above it? I'm not sure if that makes sense. The clone came with a prebuilt coil and that had the leads going to the posts from the top of the coil.

yes.. bandaid is from accidently poking myself with the kanthal wire.. lol

I build mine with the leads at the bottom. That being said that coil is certainly fine to vape on. That being said it looks like you have a mech mod. I would check every build with an ohm meter before firing to be on the safe side.

I definitely have an ohm meter to check my resistance. Quick question... Is there any difference between the leads going from the top as opposed to the bottom?

Thanks for the response Despraci.

Coil came out good, no shorts, ohm exactly where i wanted it. Now I have some leaking issue out of the airhole. I'm very familiar with wicking KFL, aren't they supposed to be pretty similar? I am using organic cotton as wick.

Leaking from the air hole can occur for a couple different reasons.
#1 you top fill the atty, some drips will occur after filling.
#2 you cross threaded the tank and have a air leak and it's totally sealed. (Plastic tank only)
#3 bad o-ring and you have a vacuum leak.

There are better coil gurus on ECF, but for me I just find it easier when building my own coils to attach the leads having them on the bottom of the coil. There may be a slight difference in lead length effecting resistance. In regards to leaking. I keep my wicks short and against the block put my chimney on and add a donut around my coil with coil showing. If I have any juice in the air channel I fire while blowing through the bottom air hole. It can help clear juice, and also clear any cotton blocking the channel.

1 - I filled half way from the bottom screw hole.
2 - n/a
3 - I believe I have a vacuum leak. The pieces thread on like tubes of a mechanical mod. I have to dig it up somewhere but does the o-rings that come with a Kayfun work with the Russian?

The same o-rings for the Kayfun should work, but I am not 100% sure since I haven't tried it myself. Check my blog post for the Kayfun o-ring sizes and a link.

Wind your coil in the other direction so the leads will go straight to the screw.

Check the o-ring around the chimney (ie - the one you can't see while you screw the top on).

Often new Kayfun/Russian owners think they have a Leak when in actuality everything is fine. If anything causes excess e-liquid to be forced into the Air Chamber it will leak down the air passage.(Normal)

Filling to Quickly - not allowing air to naturally bleed out the air passage, causing E-liquid to be sucked into the passage.
Over Filling(leave a bubble) - forces E-liquid into the air passage.
Filling with unit tilted - 1 opening may be under e-liquid as the unit is being filled - forcing liquid into passage.

If liquid dribbles out or air is restricted, LOOSELY place a paper towel around the tank and covering the air hole.(loosely) Lightly blow into the Drip tip to push excess liquid out. Wipe and recheck.

I do mine under...and on filling, that's what I started with was a Nemesis and a Russian 91% and I knew NOTHING. and I filled the tank the first time and it was puking everywhere , the air holes, mouthpiece, etc.

the guy at the vape shop told me to fill the tank, cover the air holes, screw the cap on 1/2 way, turn it upright and then finish screwing the lid in (for the vacuum) and it works every time now.

I have seen that method and used it as well. Usually, I just barely get the threading to catch and invert. I seem to prefer using my bottom fill hole though.

Curious, I was taught to blow into the air hole while applying power to the coil to set up the negative pressure.

I wonder if one method works better than another?

Actually that is to help clear a mild flood of the coil chamber. Also, holding a finger over the air hole and sucking PRIMES the coil chamber or if already primed FLOODS it. :)

Negative pressure is developed as soon as liquid attempts to move from the Tank. An Air bubble is required to establish initial Vacuum when filling. Air(15 psi @ sea level) does not like to be stretched(thinned) and pulls back against fluid movement.
Draw overcomes the Air SPRING effect and moves liquid. New Air is added at the end of the Draw to replace used liquid and reestablish the Balance.

My first run with my Russian I had a leak but that was because I cheated and filled from the top. What I did was turn it upside down and unscrewed the deck a little bit for the air to get in. screwed it back flipped it over and fired it up and it stopped leaking. Now I always fill through the hole and there is no problems. You should have had a bunch of extra o rings with the Russian if not you can go to the Russian 91 site and buy them. It's always a good thing to have spares on hand .
