1/4 inch thick by 48 inch wide roll (bolt?), 100% bonded polyester sheet batting on the roll at Hancock Fabric store. A 6inch X 48inch piece cost me .37 cents. 
For the 510 cartridge, Cut a strip the width of the cartridge cavity. Then cut length to match depth of cavity. (I used a paper clip to measure with). Insert in cartridge cavity with tweezers and with or without mod, works great. A strip folded double and inserter with the folded edge exposed seems to be a match to the production inserts.
This might belong in the modifications section. If so, please move it.
