I had some people over at the weekend, and I noticed that my wife's cousin's boyfriend, who I hadn't seen for a couple of months, now smokes.

He used to vape, so needless to say I was somewhat surprised.

He never smoked before he took up vaping, so on the face of it, this looks like a real world example of vaping being a gateway to smoking cigarettes.

Turned out it wasn't that simple - the reason he started smoking was because all of the negative publicity got to him, and convinced him that vaping is more dangerous than smoking.
In other words, he thought he was choosing the lesser of two evils.

Obviously, by the time he left he had been reeducated, and has promised to pick vaping back up and kick the smokes.
Luckily he had not got rid of his vaping gear yet.

If this sounds like he is a dummy, think again - he has a law degree and is doing his first year working in a legal practice.

This is the power of negative advertising ladies and gents - watch out for it and set the record straight if you ever encounter it.

I know it happens, but it's hard to believe. if someone is looking to do either and really spends time doing research, it just blows me away that their conclusion would be smoking. Just looking at the chemical make ups of each should be enough , if not the politics involved.

Just think of what could be if our government would endorse vaping as a harm reduction alternative like the U.K. has.

Instead we get deeming laws and scare tactics.
Anyone says anything to me and they get pointed right at what the U.K. is doing in regards to harm reduction. Good thing scare mongering doesn't get to me. All I have to do is consider how much better I feel (and smell...) and nothing short of hard, peer reviewed and documented science is going to change my mind.

That's the problem - for some people, reading a couple of articles may be the only research they do.
Not how I go about things, but everybody's different.
The evidence is so strong that you really shouldn't have to do much research to come to the correct conclusion, but unfortunately fake news makes it difficult.

I'm from the UK, so I have been keeping an eye on things over there.
Naturally I pointed him straight to the Royal College of Physicians report and that was mostly what convinced him.

Just to be clear, he didn't think smoking was a healthy option or antything, he just read the shock journalism articles and thought 'f*** it, I might as well smoke'.

I'm sharing this post all over the place. Total lunacy... that's what money does sometimes I guess.

I though twice about it, and since I've know people with book smarts be absolutely very stupid... well...

And especially as a lawyer, you'd think that he would have checked the facts... I know that I wouldn't hire him..

:p

That said, though, I believe that most of us have seen the damage that the propaganda has done.

Smell a rat, not be fed a line, research and apply critical thinking...

I get told often in UK that "Those things are worse than ciggs".
Find ex smokers can be quite... aloof, shall we say!

My Doctor for at least 15 years retired so I had to find another one. I saw him for the first time yesterday. I like him but at one point we had to have a teaching moment when he said "you do know what is in that stuff , don't you"?. I said yes I do since I make my own. He goes on to tell me that the pg is the same thing as used in anti-freeze  I said yes, I know that but the reason it is used in anti-freeze is because it replaced an ingredient that was poison for one that is GRAS.

I went on to tell him that I have been researching this vaping miracle for well over 5 years and I am convinced that it is worlds safer than smoking and not only that but also may prove to be the cure for the common cold. I didn't really say anything about the common cold but he now knows that I no longer suffer from them. He wanted me to get a pneumonia shot. I told him why I don't feel like I need one.

Just goes to show that even a smart well educated professional can be manipulated to believe everything they read or hear on the news.

I am glad that you had a chance to talk to your wife's cousin's boyfriend and hopefully he will do his homework now that he knows not to believe everything he hears or reads.

Oh I know... I tend to be a pessimist about anything I hear or someone says when it comes to this sort of stuff (including non-vape related stuff) and I go and research it before I say a single word about it..

I tend to consider some "news" at times to be fishy just due to common sense I guess... if it doesn't ring "right" I'd rather go check.

Alas, the ability to actually search/research something is not a common skills and people jump, and jump hard at anything that it put in their faces, especially if it goes with their personality.

For example, my daughter is autistic, and every time a "feel good" news article, a movie or anything as such is seen by some people, I end up facing these "experts" that somehow, with just seeing this BS thing, know everything about autism and my daughter and want to "help".
*HUGE SIGH*

And it's been the same with vaping.. worst thing though, is that we have people in the vaping community that are simply just as bad as these type of people (hence my signature comment).

When they say "ignorance is bliss", they really hit it on the nail.. her needs are fairly simple, food, love and the very basics of things.

But then, she does miss out on so many things in life due to it being a forever "2 year old"... but bills, debts, etc. those, she'll never know. :p

You should ask him if he knows what is in his toothpaste.

And in so many processed foods and such.

Things to do:

Bring this doctor a nice lunch consisting of a soda, a nice large salad with lots of his favourite Kraft dressing and some ice cream and after he's consumed them, ask "how was those products that contains this anti-freeze that is so bad according to you?"

It's funny that people are stuck on "anti-freeze" as it can only mean car radiator fluid or windshield washer fluid, and not simply something that prevents freezing.

I used denatured alcohol once as 1/2 windshield wiper fluid. It was mucky and snowy, so I had to use the wipers and fluid as I pulled up to work. There were many trucks going the other direction on a dirt road kicking up snow and mud. My boss, outside, says, "Jesus, you smell like a brewery."

I would have hated to get pulled over by a cop, it did smell pretty strong, but damn that antifreeze worked great. And - aside from the poison the USA requires to be put in it, you can drink it (sans poison).
