Scared to stop smoking, scared to start vaping

It's hard to pinpoint for me. I've done a few cases of Internet research, and have came across that e-cigs/vapes are much safer than cigarettes. I stopped smoking cigarettes in Jan. 2015, and then I started again now, in March 2015, going through some issues and my anxiety was high-rised and I just felt like I needed them. I'm on a pack right now and starting a new job Monday. My vaporizer will surely still be used, I'm still using it along with the cigarettes. Cigarettes taste like .... now, but until this blows over, I'm guessing the smokes are the last resort.

Just try this. Whenever you want, or need, a cigarette, accept that you're going to smoke one. But only after you vape for, like, 2-5 minutes first. To the best of your ability, make this a ritual where you vape and then smoke, and convince yourself of why you should just be happy about it. If you find there are times that the cigarette still seems marvelous, even after having vaped for a bit, just accept it without pressuring yourself. If at some times, you find that you mysteriously no longer want the cigarette, then accept that too. Do this for a while, and just watch what happens, without effort. Eventually, your subconscious mind will accept that vaping can relieve your nicotine withdrawal, and you will find that even though you may "want" a cigarette, you don't actually "need" one. The more you remove the "need" for cigarettes, the fewer cigarettes you will "want." It's a process, and for me it is taking quite a long while, but I think it's worthwhile, and so I continue.

I think the psychological component is very important. In all honesty, the only reason to use vaping to quit smoking is that vaping relieves the psychological duress that usually accompanies going cold turkey. So, if you're going to use vaping to quit smoking, then why torture yourself? I have gone around and around in my mind with all these concerns, often fueled by the negative media campaign, but if I'm honest with myself the reality is without vaping I probably will continue inhaling cigarette smoke until either I die or they become impossible to obtain. Therefore, I know that even if vaping was only partially better for health than smoking, I'm still ahead by vaping. Couple that notion with the reports by long-term vapers that vaping eventually is easier to put down than quitting smoking, and then suddenly we have hope. And it is this hope that makes it worth not giving up on vaping.

I didn't start vaping to quit smoking, but it could lead to that. I did it mostly out of curiosity, but also after a long road trip with my wife who is a nonsmoker, and getting stuck in LA traffic, I needed to find some way to get nicotine, and the gum wasn't doing it for me. I am finding that vaping has gotten me to cut way back on cigs, and I may eventually quit. I find it helpful not to pressure myself to do so. The thing about smoking is that I love the social aspect of it. Hanging out with other smokers at breaks, etc. But the smell, the ash, the butts….I am always very self-conscious of these things in my line of work. It is nice to get my nic fix without feeling like I need to bathe/brush my teeth before returning to work. So I have started with just a couple things that work for me. No more smoking in the car. I vape freely. I also try to vape during the work day, and only smoke before or after. I have gone from a PPD down to less than 5/day very easily.

I started with tobacco flavors and 18mg. I ordered a VaporFi Rocket kit and got some of their juices, which were a mixed bag. I have since discovered many great flavors on the forums here, both tobacco and non. A local vape shop got me to try Nautilus mini tanks, instead of the Rocket tank, though I still use the Rocket battery. I liked the Nautilus mini better.

I find the different types overwhelming and confusing, so for now I am concentrating on finding flavors I like with the equipment I have. Maybe down the road I will experiment with different equipment. People talk of using 3mg with box mods, but for now, I need nicotine before flavor.

Hi Dave412, sounds like we're on a similar page. I got really tired of my car stinking like old tar--just revolting to passengers. Also, I no longer have to feel guilty getting my nicotine when I have passengers in the car, they actually love the vape smell. So, even during those times when I do feel hopeless about quitting smoking, the car is like an anchor that keeps me vaping.

Same thing at work--I hate being "that guy" on the elevator that stinks like old tobacco.

Hello, My name is Wayne I'm relatively new to vaping, I've been cig free since july 4th. I smoked and used the e cig for a year before that, the trick to vaping is not to do both, buy a e cig vape and never buy another pack. As for the guinea pig thing, yes vaping is somewhat experimental, however with juices the thing you want to stay away from is diacetyl and I can't remember the name of the other two chemicals, diacetyl can lead to disease that is refered to as popcorn lung, which is called that because a lot of popcorn workers got sick in the early 2000's from poor ventilation (I know this because I work at the very popcorn plant that got sued), MOST E juice brands claim not to use it. My advice on this front is make sure its a trustworthy brand, and if you think its better not to take a chance stay away from all cream or custard flavors they're the ones that contain the three problematic inhalants. There actually is a forum about them and what flavors may contain them on the forum somewhere. Do research, ask questions, the more you know the better. As for other articles I've myself heard of, The formaldehyde debate is stupid they don"t say what the e juice was and the heat they were using was highly unlikely for someone to be vaping that way. If your interested on youtube there is a video that debunks the whole thing by matt at suckmymod. Anyways if you're worried about the unknown of vaping then just use it as a crutch buy an ego and a cheap tank (I suggest a evod) help you with the withdraws. Then quit both, once you start buying mod's, drippers, RTA's, and batteries, it starts becoming a hobby which is much more addictive than the nicotine and the illusion its cheaper than smoking is gone . I hope I helped, and I hope you kick cigarettes for good.
