I think that was me and the guy I bought it from that you're talking about. I bought the one listed for $100 when the talk in this thread started. Trust me I wish the money could have gone to the guy who made it. It's just not the way it worked out. I tried getting in on the co-op and missed out. I got no response from Dan(?) but I don't blame him. I'm sure his inbox was swamped with 100s of other requests just like mine. It just didn't work out for me and many others this time around.

I am glad I finally had a chance to get one. It's not in my hands yet but I'm sure as hell looking forward to it.

So Dan, anything new to show since you got the shaped pyrex for the center tube?

LOL man I just got back yeasterday! And they lost our only checked bag, that had the DSUv6 in it!
Luckly it arrived this morning and a quick check showed that the 3/8 tapper was not big enough, I was eyeballing it when pulling the hot pyrex, will have to try again. Atleast the Gnome make it home without being broken... thats another story :)

Hey guys, I did a test run of some ceramic braid wick atop my scubagen and am getting a really harsh kind of acidic taste to it. Torched the :censored: out of it til it glowed white, used a two inch piece across the posts on the scubagen first time with a 2 ohm 32ga coil and the second time with a 5.6 ohm nichrome coil and either way I still get a bad taste. Tried running about 2ml of juice through it and still. Then I tried crankin it up to 12 watts on the darwin and dry burning it til the coil turned red a few times and still the same taste. Am I missing a step or doing something wrong?

Edit: I did search for the answer but all I could find is conversation about where to buy and what type and how to torch it - nothing else. I believe the type I have is XC-116

So is the sleeve over the SS wick? Cause it sounds like a wicking problem to me. The coil is not wet enough and getting to hot producing the bad taste. Are the end of the SS wick open so they act like a straw? How is the draw on it, is it stiff? Might drill a 1/32" hole in the side of the tubing of the vapor chamber to increase air flow.

Just need to make the external tube, hopfully tonight. Have a football game to go to that my daughter is cheering in.

I used the XC4-116 and have the same taste as the SS wick. (the XC4 has a higher burn rate, but should not make much of a difference for our application.)

Try dropping a few drips on top of the ceramic sleeve wick. Does this help with the taste? Like Dan said it sounds like a wicking problem.

Can you bake a small piece in your oven to make a new wick? And see if the open flame you applied to the original wick might have degraded the fibers?

What color was your sleeving when you purchased it? It should be a nice white color. I've had some batched that were pink, that needed to be heat treated.

Dan

I found that putting a hole in the side and putting in a length of ce2 tube to direct the air directly to the coil works even better. My tube is about 1/16" away from the coil.
