Im using my semovar with either Hi Drain Efest purple 35A IMR or Panasonic Li-ion protected. Both working without issues.
Stick with an IMR battery, safest.
Mine never get warm, just from own hands.

EDIT
Forget what i said, i just googled my Li-ion batteries, my other 2 are CGR18650CH, witch are hybrids, and 10 Amps.

Anyway, if your battery is getting hot, you probably have a defective battery. Stop using it now.
Better be safe than sorry, you wouldnt want it to flame or explode. The best outcome of a cracked battery is you losing your mod. The bad outcome is your losing your hands.

I just started using my Semovar with a 16000 mAh battery at 3.7 volts. When I fire it, I feel it getting warm around the vents. Is this normal?

I've never heard of an IMR battery with more than 3200 mAh. Therefore, unless the "16000 mah" is a typo, you're using an ICR chemistry battery. Those are obsolete to be using them in mods. Reason why? Because they don't take kindly to stress and overheating. You've confirmed your battery gets warm. News flash: batteries should never get warm. If they are, they are being abused in the wrong application. ICR batteries are for low drain applications like common flashlights.

Regulated mods require a high-drain, safe-chemistry IMR battery. (ICR batteries are low drain) ICR batteries are likely to vent hot gas and flames if abused, and possibly explode.

Get the proper batteries for you mod: IMR or IMR/hybrid batteries. There's a large list of them in my first link above. Vape safe.
