thought i'd help out some of the newbies to Genesis attys by posting a video. this is actually the video I watched right before I built my fist genny. Goes over how to deal with hot spot issues. the title of the thread should stick out to people looking for a place to start.

It's by JC West, he's on facebook to and is pretty good about getting back to people with questions.

It's weird, I've had times where I didn't torch it much and had it work perfect with no hot spots, and I've had other times where I've had to keep pulling the wick back out and torching it over and over until it was a crispy rod before it would work... I prefer the less torching since it seems to taste better in the log run.

I've been using Nextel around the top recently so I don't even have to torch anymore.

i will admit thats one of the first videos i saw that worked but put the wick in and went, BLEA thats nasty tasting. quit playing with that and then started experimenting with the drillbit coils and pulsing and loved it. sometimes when im tired i will cheat and use a bic lighter to just blacken the end a bit.

Hot spots come more from excessive wire pressure on wick than anything else.

Thorough torching is pretty old school now. Using pulse method torching is not needed, and if you have a regulated device like a VAMO a quick pass would do. As long as you apply the right amount of pressure while wrapping coil youre fine.

Torching and juice burns aren't even necessary if you use the pulse method.

Yea, I pulse a lot more now than I used to. Not sure how the unoxidized section of the wick touching the edges of the wick hole is effecting things though. It's gotta have it's disadvantages. I use Nextel a lot now to.
