I live in Reno. Placed an order from a place in Las Vegas. We're at opposite ends of the state. You can drive the distance in one full day. Package went out on Tuesday and USPS expects it to be delivered on Saturday.

Really?

I think it went by way of Pony Express and the horse only has 3 legs.

Geez.

That is a pretty awful ship time. I would think 48 hours is more reasonable.

It just really depends where your hub is. I don't get the postal service either, quite honestly.

If I send something to another person in Tucson, it's going to go down to Phoenix, get processed there, and sent back.

I would say it would be easier to drive it to the person, but then that involves facing Tucson drivers and Tucson infrastructure, neither of which is exactly STELLAR, so to speak.

I have given up on understanding the mail system, but at least there aren't quite as many hijacked pony expresses and all that. Etc.

I commiserate however.

Yeah, the hub stuff makes sense under some, but certainly not all circumstances. In years gone by, each post office had a separate box (usually inside) for "local" stuff only; stuff going to the same ZIP code, that they would sort themselves and you could be reasonably confident that they would deliver such stuff the next day. But no more. It ALL goes to the nearest hub first now, which means there is absolutely no point in running something over to the next town to mail it from the post office that you know delivers to your recipient.

How is Phoenix "down" from Tucson? Phoenix is north of Tucson. That's UP. :D

2-3 weeks ago I sent a Priority Mail Flat Rate package (expected delivery time of 2 days) to someone who's only about 2 hours away from me in Florida. I mailed it on a Monday. It took a scenic trip up to Indiana, bounced around back and forth up there between 2 different cities, and then was finally shipped back to Florida...only after I created a case for locating it with the USPS. The person finally got it that Friday!

Am I the only one who noticed that USPS tracking doesn't show the intermediate locations any more? It used to be interesting and/or infuriating to watch packages bounce around to oddball locations and get hung in certain areas. Now it's just "next destination" or "processing center". I believe it's intentional so we don't realize how crazy the routing is.

I run into that problem here in California all of the time. I have a Geekvape Aegis coming over from China that is supposed to be delivered no later than this Saturday - which is the worst possible delivery day estimation. It is almost certain to be sitting in a hub for a day, then sitting in my local post office all weekend and out for delivery on Monday.

Ugh you sound like my husband. Everywhere is "down" to me, and if you are at the south pole ,it makes sense, but mainly I have no mapping skill. Left and right are hazy concepts at times, also.

He says "bouhten" instead of "bought" (PA dialect, and I go down to:
the river
any location not my own
especially travelling north.

LOL

I am not sure what you all expect from the USPS. It is a government run entity so it runs at government efficiency. Which is why I can't imagine anyone wanting OUR government to run healthcare.

I'm from the South and we always said 'down' to larger, more industrial places and 'up' to smaller, more homey places. Down to the city and up to Grandma's house.

My last package from Fasttech spent 4 days "in transit" from Indianapolis to Grand Rapids, MI. They also came within 3 miles of my post office without stopping. This is a 5 hour drive. I think USPS does this so we will opt for the more expensive shipping options.

I don't think the USPS is that clever. FedEx ABSOLUTELY does that. I have busted them several times doing this with a package that had arrived at the nearest FedEx hub several days early, then purposefully sitting on it until the initial "expected delivery date". I even called them about it once after a package had been at the local hub for 3 business days and asked why it was just sitting there. The guy on the phone admitted that they would not deliver it before the expected date, saying if I wanted it faster I should pay for it.

On the other hand I frequently get UPS shipments earlier than expected. So guess which shipper I use.

An update! According to USPS tracking the package arrived in Reno at approximately 5:00 this morning and then made it to what I assume is my post office branch at about 8:00 am. However, it does not say "Out For Delivery". It still says delivery by 8:00 pm Saturday.

I guess they're just going to sit on it for a couple days. No hurry, right?

Do they not understand that this is VAPE MAIL we're talking about? o_O

If it arrives at the local post office after the delivery jeeps have left with the daily mail, they have to wait until the next day. It will probably come tomorrow.
