There are far worse things than death. Life has no survivors, that's a fact. After six years of formal psychology education, I am convinced that happiness (joy, bliss), a solid sense of social support, and a great sense of humor are far more potent weapons against disease than the addition/elimination of any particular chemical or particulate from our existence. I do recall several of my professors stressing the greatest contributing factor to cancer was...fear of cancer (death, illness). It is believed that 99% of disease is psychological in origin. Health or illness comes about through far more complex processes than simple, measurable equations. Living organisms are complex and sophisticated creatures; life never exists in a vacuum.
My experience in botany has proven to me that a plant that is strong, robust, and vital does not succumb to disease, insects or molds. Stress that plant over time (insufficient light, too much or too little water) and the protective "coating" weakens and breaks. Insects and disease appear seemingly out of thin air. Were they there all along without the opportunity to penetrate the plant?
Most significant of all, my experience with meditation has shown me that the suspension of worry, concern with minutiae, and constant striving to live up to some internal or external standard of acceptability brings immediate alleviation of physical symptoms and complete rejuvenation of health and vitality.
A few quotes come to mind: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." ~Hamlet, Shakespeare
and "It's a half an inch of water and you think you're gonna drown. That's the way that the world goes 'round" ~John Prine
Lastly, "I'll sleep when I'm dead" ~Warren Zevon
