You're a bit late asking this. I had some awful coils that were so gunked up that I couldn't get a wick through them, even after a dry burn. They're history. Given that I'm bad about changing my wicks, I'm sure I'll have some more just like them in the future.

Those are definitely funky coils!

I've used stainless steel wire for years. A roll of SS 316 wire makes lots of coils and I've probably gotten a couple of years off a roll. You can lightly dry burn an SS coil and immediately dunk it under the sink tap to wash off the residue and it lasts quite a while. Change the wick and it's good for another round.
