I'm afraid that was all self taught.
It does not require a $1,200 purchase of Adobe Photoshop. I use Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. I downloaded it last summer from the Adobe website on sale for $45 at my boss's request, for editing photos of samples.
The program impressed me so much, I downloaded a copy of it for myself as well. Adobe offers 2 week free trials, and free online instructional videos so if anyone is interested, I encourage them to give it a try. I'm always learning something new and improving my techniques, as looking at my earlier signatures tends to make me wince and shake my head now.
I just learned how to do vape smoke from DoogieTony (in the REO forum) a day or two ago.
If enough people are interested, I could do a basic tutorial blog post and share my master Provarinati .png files (basically, all the Provarinati logos we use).
There are a ton of videos on Photoshop on YouTube, as well. I have always used another graphics program in Creative Suites, but I am currently taking an image editing class, so it's finally time for me to learn Photoshop beyond the basics.
For backgrounds, I use the gradients and patterns. You can get many interesting effects that way. This has the advantage of being able to use the exact colors you want to rather than what someone else has chosen.
I will say both PoM and Ocelot put me to shame, but I will catch up.
