It could be a webserver problem, i.e if a webserver goes down, the overall free MaxClients in the load balancing pool goes down, increasing queueing times for HTTP requests, but this shouldn't cause massive delays. The more likely explanation is that the backend database is now too large to fit in RAM, and the database cache hit ratio is a bit lower than it could be, causing excessive disk IO, as both the database and filesystem caches are becoming exhausted. A temporary fix would be to rebuild indexes, and to physically reorder the main forum posts table in order of threadid, so that table scans don't use massive database block size chunks of VM. A more permanent fix would be to install more server memory or to cull threads/posts.

That'll be $20 - cheap at half the price :)

I've been on other forums where it's been said that long threads hammer the server. There are some here that are just ridiculous, a few thousand pages at the maximum posts / page setting...

Maybe slowly splitting them up, or implementing a limit so people can start a 'part 2' thread, and mods can put posts linking them together, would help.

(I don't know anything at all about databases, so bring your own grain of salt...)

Our mods have been splitting long threads for quite a while. There are several Part 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 threads. But I agree that more need to be split. We are a chatty group. ;)

I also think that something needs to be done with the likes--it takes a very long time now to check those. I tried getting to them from my profile page--same thing...

Why is everyone in such a hurry? Just take a vape and slow down.
Trust me life is way way to short to worry about loading times. :2c:

Are you kidding??? What if there is an emergency?!?!?!?! ;)

Because life is so short is precisely why long load times are not acceptable. :D Not like we're talking one long page load, one time, once in awhile. That said the site has been working better for me lately, but I see it's not so for others... and when it was horrid for me, it was ok for some others.... so there are def problems with the site that need fixin'. And fixin' stuff is better than leavin' it broke and "chillin'" with the broke parts. :2c: :D

Went down for me completely for quite some time a few days back. Had to clear all the cobwebs from the sundry particulars stored for the domain to crawl back in.

Won't somebody please just give a donation? Come on! 160k+ members. Nothin' good is cheap, or free. At least nothing we value.

Just sayin'.

:)
