Hey all,

Really really sorry for not getting on to this - I've been totally snowed under with the e-cigarette summit and have been totally out of the loop for a couple of weeks.

Firstly, please don't donate just to get the servers working. They should be already, and this is totally my fault. It's number 1 priority in a big list of things that are my priority (now the summit is over). I will get onto the server tech right now and work out whether we need an upgrade or not.

Many thanks for your continued support,

SJ

Like I said Smokey...Nothin' good is cheap, or free. At least nothing we value.

When we do, we give something back. Hope more do. Great forum. Great people.

Good luck!

:)

I've been a member here for awhile. Since I started frequenting this site, I've noticed as others have a severe degradation in performance. I love this site and everyone here. Matter of a fact, I intend to become a paying member once I can give a good amount of money. This site is worth it and I encourage everyone to do so. What can we do as faithful members get past this performance problem? If money is an issue, I am more than positive that most of the members here would financially support some kind of fund raiser.

This is the GREAT, e-cig forum that we have all learned from and shared our experiences to help others. Lets keep it in TOP NOTCH shape!!!

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions please post them.

I too am noticing some slight delays from page to page. Nothing as drastic as this thread's OP, but sometimes a 2-3 second lag when generally local sites (local as in US-hosted servers) are always 1 second or less for me.

Maybe the popularity of ecigs is spiking this quarter and more traffic is being driven. If these stats are any indication, I think I might be correct:
E-cigarette-forum.com - Statistics, Analysis and Domain info
Scroll to the bottom, drop down to trailing 12 month, and you'll see this mid/late-2013 spike:

Good going ECF! There's a lot of positive information here so the more the merrier. Though I'm sure the admins are already very aware of the spike and are working on mitigating any traffic issues. :)

I would say it takes 8-10 seconds for any click in this forum to go through, and 20 seconds to see my notifications. Something is haywire - it's like 28k dialup internet in these parts, lol. I love this forum, and need the info as I'm a newb, so I hope things get worked out soon. I just threw them a few bucks... hope that helps in getting things fixed.

Using Chrome and have uber fast cable internet, also cleared cookies, etc.

I use a cheapie compaq Presario C717NR laptop from Christmas 2007 - I am on with FireFox - my pages load in 3-4 seconds...and yes, the larger threads and threads with craptons of videos load a little slower...about 5-7 seconds.

From experience on running larger online forums, I can say with confidence that the things that influence board speed are

1) IOPS - worst case random read and write speeds to hard disk. Best is a large stripe width on a hardware RAID10, and a large battery-backed writeback cache, with lots of software adaptive readahead, on the database server. Worst is RAID5, the write performance on it is terrible. For a board this big I would use 15000rpm SAS drives, or SSD. Actually the key to getting decent performance out of a modern database is battery-backed writeback cache.
2) A well tuned database. The database software needs to allocate as much memory as it can, but it needs to be balanced carefully with filesystem cache. For a board this size I would choose PostgreSQL or Oracle, and forget MySQL even with InnoDB
3) Database server memory. Memory is cheap. Install to the limit of the motherboard. If the motherboard can't take more than 32GB then change the motherboard till it can.

Hi everyone, to confirm we are looking into this as a matter of urgency.

Really sorry about the variability of performance. As the above poster noted, we are getting huge spikes in traffic - not least because google did something which seems to have cleared out a lot of the, ahem, rubbish in their e-cig search results.

Thanks for working on the issues! I posted in another thread that got closed. Anyways it is definitely not the end user internet speed I have a 50 down 5 up connection. I use ipad mini on the couch, slow load times, flush cache and cookies frequently. Desktop in the other room is super silly fancy and stuff with ssd raid array for primary drive. Loads slow there as well, flush cookies and cache every time the browser closes. Not that I browse from work or anything :p but it loads slow there too.

It does seem to randomly get better.

Anyways you guys are on it and probably know the issue. o7
