Hi there! I've been vaping for some time now. Prior to starting a friend left their ecig in my car & there was a nauseating smell which i recognised around him & didn't leave the car until i located lost ecig. A member of my family is whinging about a similar smell around me & where my varouriser is!!! Horror!!! I cant smell it & apparently they didn't think so with other fluids.

I am wondering why & I have some ideas I would like others to consider & confirm/deny

1. This ecig fluid has expired according to the bottle, smells fine in bottle. I have previously had liquids so revolting i couldn't use. I suspected that had gone off, but what is to go off? I was unsure if I just didn't like flavour.

2. I am currently using a higher nicotine concentration (theory I will use less). Does burnt nicotine smell offensive?

3. My previous supplier was from China & I stopped purchasing because friends said Chinese products can contain fermeldahyde. Has my current liquid got an offensive preservative or again, has it gone off??

Thank you for your opinions

Doubt it and doubt it is the same smell that put you off at the time. People are highly sensitive to smells and like taste, what's nice is a highly subjective matter.
I think I have around a hundred flavors/aromas and some are basically banned for indoor usage by my girl. In the end boiled it down to cinnamon which she detests and can detect at levels I can't perceive.
None the less, unless you're on a very very tight budget, I'd toss the expired liquid though.

1) Nicotine is a bit acidic in nature. Over time nicotine will break down other chemicals like flavorings, and the liquid will gradually darken. Left in the heat, left in direct sunlight, and if not refrigerated nicotine base especially VG based nicotine base will become rancid after a few months, from 6months up to 18months depending on how cool you keep it while stored, in a freezer it can last up to 3yrs or so, at room temperature it could last about 6months. So yes, e-liquid can go bad if kept in the very hot heat, direct sunlight, or just time at volatile storage temperatures (room temp and such).

2) Just like cig smoke, an individual vaper can become desensitized to their own vapor if they use it very often, month, 2months constant use. There are certain flavors that curl my nose and make me cringe at their smell, had a buddy all he vaped most the day was Big Willy's Custard, the scent of it just nauseates me, while in return he can't stand the smell of my tobaccos and RY4s as an example of what you describe.

Firstly, All e-cigs will have a certain smell if you are using a certain flavor. We are around it, and so we cannot smell it. But, Others will be able to smell it. I personaly dont see what the probolem is making a room smell like vanilla, or melon, But such is life.

As for the Chinese products having formaldehyde.... The Chinese stuff is just mass produced. It does not mean they have formaldehyde. If they had formaldehyde, then all ecigs would.
Eliquid is super cheap to produce as it is.
Formaldehyde can be produced by burning any liquid at super high temperatures and gettign burnt hits (I believe, Someone can correct me if I am wrong)

The Chinese liquid is fine. Not the best QUALITY, as in, its not premium juice. But It isnt going to kill you.

The thing you need to watch out for is Diktones and diacetyl. I believe that is specific to flavors anyways, but do some research,,,, even a lot of american vendors have Diktones

https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/threads/diketones-free-vendors.646453/

But..think about it, those are in the concentrates.
Where are vendors getting concentrates? From china? These are things you need to look out for. Vendors COULD potentially be gettign flavors from china, and then, you are pretty much still on chinese juice, regardless of where you bought it.

I know people who vape Chinese juice. Never had an issue. But ultimitely the choice is yours.... I am not saying you should go back to it, Just ... One person says chinese juice has formaldehyde, then they tell another person who tells another person, who tells another person that E-juice has formaldehyde, who tells another person that E-cigs have formaldehyde, Pretty soon people are running around saying vaping gives you the black plague.

I agree alot with spencer, but if you want cheap e juice diy.. can't get any cheaper than that if on a budget (please research before handling nicotine and mixing flavors with harmful ingredients aka diacetyl or "buttery flavors", as mentioned, among other chemicals) and you'll know what your inhaling to an extent .. a quick Google search of "tainted Chinese products" can show you a history of such but it's more on the company or brand imo. If based on profit, and not the consumers, then the consumers have only to lose. American and other countries have done much of the same though, just look at the sport supplement industry. I'd toss the juice and rewick with something reputable if worried.

Keep calm and vape on bro :)

Many liquids smell a little. It usually dissipates in a minute.

As for the China story... well, who's to say for sure. I don't think ALL Chinese liquid is dodgy, in fact I use Hangsen most of the time. I also know people who have used it since day 1, which is a long time ago, wayyy before I took up Vaping.

I wouldn't vape 'auction site' Chinese liquid, no. I think if Hansen was loaded with chemicals that produced formaldehyde, I think we'd know by now. Let's face it, it suits all e-liquid makers from US/UK/EU to make up rumours about anything from China.
