I have mild-to-moderate COPD and am also blessed with adult-onset asthma - I quit analogs a bit less than three weeks ago.

Used to be I'd wake up feeling pretty rotten every morning until the inhaled meds kicked in and my blood oxygen levels returned to something closer to normal. More often than not now I forget to take my inhaled meds, which is something I *never* did when I was still smoking and it's only been 19 days. I've discussed going off the daily inhaled meds with the spousal unit and just using a rescue inhaler if I need it but she's kinda dead set against the idea until I talk to my pulmonologist and she's probably right.

Don't get me wrong - I still have the lung capacity of a ten-year old, but after about the third day I quit waking up sick in the morning, i'm not coughing up hairballs any more and I haven't felt this good in years. My lung doc says he doesn't care if I have nicotine as long as I'm not smoking sickarettes and I've got pretty close to a couple thousand prescription Nicrotrol inhaler cartridges laying around the house.

This is the best thing I've done in years.

The argument for ecigs in a nutshell is that cigarettes are shown to cause respitory problems, and ecigs so far have not shown to cause respitory problems.

You are right, in that inhaling nothing but clean air will be the best thing for your body. Ecigs are a way to get nicotine by inhalation that cuts out burning tobacco and carcinogens as a result, plus 4000+ chemicals they put in cigarettes.

You might want to check out the health section ( Health and Medical Issues ) of this forum for a better idea of what's happening right now.

No one can say for sure that ecigs will cause no problems or that they are completely safe compared to cigarettes. What can be said is, in theory ecigarettes are much safer than cigarettes but as they're "new" with no long term effect studies done, no one can say in all certainty they actually are or will be.

Yes I am trying to do some research about respiratory problems in ecigs vs analogs. Hoping to write an article. It seems so far that it is much better to smoke ecigs than analogs, but I still need to gather a lot of information.

All I have is personal experience to share, after starting vaping I still had shortness of breath for about 2 months. Then I discovered that PG loosens mucous and other nasties in your lungs and the coughing started, for a week and half to two weeks I coughed up all sorts of stuff. Since then I breath a lot better and have more energy than when I was smoking. Still you will want to check out the Health and Medical Issues sub forum and learn a bit more.

It seems like this would be important information for someone trying to switch to ecigs. Perhaps the initial 'clean out' period may not be comfortable or fun, but eventually it subsides.

This is only my third day without real cigs and this morning was the first time I woke up without that awful mucous in my throat. Also was not out of breath after walking up the stairs this morning. Usually the first trip up the stairs in the morning from the bedroom leaves me a little short of breath. I say that is an improvement!

as time goes by and the day i stopped my analogs after 30+ yrs..my daily cough disappeared and my taste buds returns, all because i switched over to e-cig and now happily vaping for over 3 months..only wish i knew about e-cig earlier..regards mafig

Sounds great. I'm glad to see it worked out well for you. I am thinking it makes sense for people to switch to vaping and see how it goes. It could improve their life... well the respiratory function part of their life anyway.

I have had Eosinophillic Granuloma of the lungs for 18 years now and have seen a HUGE improvement in my breathing. Honestly it's probably NOT the best course of action for me but it's a lot better IMHO than smoking for sure. I can do things now I never could have before.

I have no idea what that is, but I'm glad you have had an improvement in your breathing.

I was diagnosed with COPD and asthma about 6 months ago. I was sent to a pulmunologist for treatment, of course the first thing he tells me is I had to quit smoking analogs (1-1/2 pks/day for 35 years). Told him I have tried everything...but couldn't stick with it. He told me to get an e-cig, it would do me good!

My kit will arrive today!! Can't wait to get home :D

I wonder this too... and while i realize that inhaling nothing would be the absolute best option, i know that vaping is a MILLION times better, at least judging from the impact it has had on my life

1 - i can run up stairs without losing my breath
2 - i can run a couple miles every morning and not feel like im going to die afterwards
3 - i can swim a mile every night at the gym after dinner and feel good when im done
4 - i can hold my head high when i tell my wife i finally quit
5 - i never have to walk into a convenience store again if i dont want to instead of going in every day and spending $5 to $10 on smokes and crap
6 - i can taste food again
7 - NO GUILT

is it the lesser of 2 evils? maybe, but for now analogs are proven to definitely cost you your life, e-cigs are not

Well if your pulmonologist suggested an ecig it makes sense to try it. I'm thinking this is a great way to bring back some health for smokers of analogs.
