I recently bought a U-DCT locking cartomizer tank.
I bought 5 cartomizers to go with it, they are 1.5ohm dual coils.

I read that, as they're dual coils, they equate to 3ohms, so I vaped them on my eGo Twist at 4.8 volts (should be fine, right?)
I put juice in the cartomizer first, then the tank and vaped them. After about 5 minutes I got a slight burnt taste, so I added a few drops to the cartomizer and it was okay again, for about another 5 minutes.

I thought maybe it was just an odd dry hit, so took a few more hits on it, and then I got a very strong burnt taste and smell coming from the cartomizer.

This has happened with two of my cartomizers. No matter how much juice I put in them now, they always taste burnt. I don't want to use another one until I find out what I'm doing wrong.

Anyone know?

Thanks

I've never had much luck with dual-coil cartomizers. It could be they aren't wicking well. Make sure the holes aren't covered by the tank seal. I have had some cartomizers with which I had to make the holes bigger. Also, make sure you completely fill the cartomizers before you put them in your tank the first time. Thick juices can have a hard time wicking in a tank system as well.

i like to put juice in the carto until a little tiny bit of juice comes out the bottom. It takes a while because you dont want to over flood it, so you'll have to put like 3-4 drops and then wait until the juice seeps into the carto, then another 3-4 drops, etc, repeat until it reaches the bottom.

You will have to keep adding drops every so often back into the carto. If you dont you'll get a burnt taste and then that burnt taste will never go away. I'm a heavy vapor and never put the thing down, so i had to add another 2-3 drops like twice a day.

Hope some of this info helps! :)

Also OP, i would highly suggest Rebuildable atomizers like an inexpensive AGA-T2. I've only been vaping for about 3 weeks now and i also started with carto's, but once i got the AGA-T2 i will never look back to cartos. The flavor of the juice really comes out when you use a rebuildable. Theyre super easy to build, tons of videos on youtube.

I don't quite think I'm ready for a rebuildable atomizer yet, I like hassle free vaping, not to mention how rediculous it would look on my eGo Twist.

I think I'll buy the 3 hole cartomizers and make sure that I let the juice fully soak down into the cartomizer next time.

Thanks for everyone's help :)

An XL carto like the dual coils you're using usually takes 1.7ml of liquid to completely fill. When inside the tank, are you witnessing bubbles escape from the wicking hole? This is very important. I started my parents with the single-hole cartos in DCTs, and they had the same complaint you're expressing. I sourced 3-hole cartos, and they experienced flooding (where the liquid is absorbed too much). This caused gurgling when the liquid came out the connector end of the carto. I finally got them satisfied with 2-hole cartos. The liquid they use is 60/40. If you have a thicker VG liquid, it will cause issues with wicking.

Either thin the liquid with PGA or distilled water (only a couple drops/10ml) or invest in dual/triple-hole cartos. Make sure the top of the carto filler looks "slushy" before vaping. Also, try a hard pull on the carto without firing if the liquid doesn't seem to be wicking. When you do a hard pull you should see one or two bubbles escaping the wicking hole. If not, suck harder. *Get your mind outta the gutter. I'm talking about ecigs, kids.

It's VERY important to first fill a carto fully and correctly whether you're using a tank or not. Place a round toothpick in the center airway and drip drops in.. Take outside and "thermometer" shake towards the batt end of carto. drip again and thermometer shake. The sign your carto is not first filled properly is you're getting a burnt taste after a few vapes. If the carto is full you should be able to vape on it for at least an hr+ with or without a tank. I use single coil cartos on my Spinners and twist.

You cannot use 1.5 ohm dual coil cartomizers on any eGo model PV. That is the problem right there. The eGo's come with the weak 2.5 amp switch regulator. They just don't have the amperage to handle 1.5 ohm dual coils. If you had a PV that had a 3.5 - 5 amp switch, the 1.5 ohm DCC would work just fine. In fact, using it at about 12 watts or 4.5 volts, they really shine, providing nice warm, full vapor and no burning what so ever.

So it's not the DCC that is the problem. It's the inherent limitations in weak amp model PV's such as the eGo's. This why I don't recommend PV's with small/weak switch regulators.

I think the OP just might be happier with single coil cartomizers. I had the same issue with dual coils when I first began using cartotanks. Once I switched to single coils I never had further issues with that burnt taste after about 5 minutes of use.

This was with mechanical mods at the time, so it wasn't an issue with ego batteries or amp limitations. I found that I prefer the cooler vape that single coil cartomizers provide. I also prefer standard or high resistance cartomizers (2.1-3.0 ohm) on variable voltage devices.

Since you're using the 1 hole version, the problem most likely is that you draw too hard for a 1 hole system. I would suggest that you use at least the 2 hole version, or just change your draw to a longer, slower style.

Yes, How You use an item does make a difference. If you're a hard hitter, the juice can't get through the single hole fast enough to hit the coils.

Also, with the UDCTs, using the standard flat locking ring, the airflow is also restricted more so than other DCTs. If your UDCT is down as far as it goes, even on an eGo battery, you can cut off some of the already restricted airflow it has. Try using the UDCT with out the bottom locking ring and see how that goes. There is a eGo style locking ring for the UDCTs that extends over the eGo connection and improves airflow.

Just suggestions from my experiences with them.

Sort of... The coils themselves are each 3ohm coils, for a total ohm of 1.5. I also found that to avoid the dry burnt hits, I had to drill the existing hole out from 1mm, to about 3 or 4mm, now it wicks just fine, and I rarely get dry hits... Usually if I do get the odd dry hit, I just turn down the volts for a couple puffs, and all is right again.

The cartomizers that I bought only have one hole, however they come with 2 and 3 hole options, should I try the 3 hole option and see if this works better?

I would recommend that you keep the one hole and make it slightly larger that way it doesn't drowned the coil and make pop up in your mouth or go down the battery. Just put a some drops in it before putting it in a tank and get nice and wet then do your normal tank fill. Then do the bottom prime method in the video posted previously where you plug the bottom part that connects to the battery and suck from the mouth piece a couple time until you her the juice gurgle once then let it sit right side up for 1 min. This should result in awesome vapor hits with great flavor for at least two weeks then on the third to fourth performance goes down slowly. As cheap as you can get these I toss mine after two week every time.

Hope this helps:2cool:

Happy vaping
