All you folks complaining about computers have it easy.

I've been struggling along with this pile o' parts, had to assemble them myself even.

Had to turn this pile of junk:

Into this assembled pile of junk:

Then I've been forced to use the damned thing for the last year and a half, on a 1440p monitor. I mean, it's not even 4k, and 780ti boards are so 2013!

Been there

To many times:shock:

Lost the computer room to Grand kids, several years ago.:(

Thought once you raised your own you were done.:-x

Some of you guys talking about your first computers really make me feel old. I didn't own my first computer til I was an adult, but in school the first one I used didn't even have floppy drives, it took a tape to save anything.

When I say save I do mean after you wrote it as there were no pre bought programs for it.

The next ones I use where the old apple computers that you had to have the boot disk for.
hahaha did you turn yours into a Maquarium too?

Good for you! And congrats on the twins! Boys or girls? I have twin boys...they'll be 21 this weekend! It's hard going to school with little ones around, but I did it when mine were little and worked 2 jobs at the time too...talk about being tired all the time!!!!

Boy and a girl! And I had em on my birthday, to boot! Hahah. And yea, it's hard some days. Definitely worth it though. I couldn't imagine working a second job right now. Just keeping up with homework and the house is hard. Lmao. Kudos to you! :D

Congratulations on your twins and on going to school! That is quite an accomplishment!! :)

Thank you! Just trying to do what needs to be done to give them the opportunities I never had. :)

My son hated 8/8.1. He downgraded to 7 and after trying the 10 upgrade, he went back to 7.

My first PC was an AT with a whopping 640k of memory which I upgraded to 1 meg, and a 20 MB hard drive. Next was a self built AMD 386 40 Mhz. Over the years, everything had gotten replaced in that tower case except for the case itself and the power supply. Went up to a 486, then a Pentium II. I had probably went through about 5 or 6 different graphics cards on that. After that I stopped building PC's from components and just bought pre-built ones. Had a Celeron desktop for the kids, and laptops.

Went back to desktops a year ago when my sons wanted gaming machines. Started with Lenovo K450's (i5, Nvidia 630 graphics card). Bumped up the memory to 16 GB, swapped out the power supplies with 750 watt supplies, and replaced the graphics with Nvidia GTX760 cards and added Corsair mechanical keyboards. And added 4 TB secondary drives to supplement their 1 TB main drives.
Wow, that's a lotta terrabytes!! I have an HP desktop and that sucker runs great. I use it when the laptop gets so annoying I want to chuck it, lol. Is it too much to ask to have a laptop that can keep up with my style of computering? I think not! :D I really do need to do something with this hunk of junk, though. My life would be so much easier if my computer would just obey me. :)

Well you should be proud! It's hard work no matter what and you're doing it and that's what matters! You're giving your kids someone to be proud of! Awesome!

I wonder if people never realized you can do anything you need off the Desktop in Windows 8.1
I run a load of traditional windows based Programs from my Venus 11 Pro Tablet.

Drop in Keyboard comes in handy.

ECF gets the 1545 laptop - Tweaked;)

I have 8.1, and I always use the standard desktop. I don't find any major problems with 8.1, at least none that aren't the usual "betatest our software for us" from microsloth. It seems reasonably stable.

That's what i have is a Satellite and i hate this thing.Different Toshiba programs keep shutting themselves down or just quit responding,it has crashed on me a few times or will just freeze up.I thought the hard drive was the crashing issue,so i bought a new to replace it,and it crashed 5 minutes after i got the new drive all booted up haha.At tax time,i am definitely replacing this thing.
I have been reading lately that some of the Satellites running 8 were never configured correctly and I am of the mindset that I have one of those. Did you get yours right after 8.1 came out? I tried VERY hard to find one that was running 7 at the time I had to buy this one but I got it during that brief period of time when you could not find a Windows 7 computer anywhere. I absolutely hate this freaking thing.

No.. it seems we are never done..

At this point in our life, my husband is considering the purchase of a one room cabin (so we wont have company capability) to fulfill his life-long dream of chasing me around the house (fill in appropriate mode of dress here)

lol... you might want to try that route too! :)

My queen has just informed me of the same item........... so it's either go out, sit, have a couple cocktails while waiting for a seat, or toss something in a pan and eat.
btw, going to fire up the stovetop lol, she don't like me when she's hungry ...........

Nope. Still have an antique Mac Performa 550 (33Mhz - talk about S L O W) and it is still functional and there is NEVER a blue screen of death.
Of course, what I am typing on right now is an eMachine with Windoze 7 and it crashes routinely.

We also have two 4 TB network drives connected to our router for network storage. And my son only has 500 GB free on his main drive and 1 TB free on his secondary. The rest is full of game files, and anime videos that he's downloaded and either haven't watched yet, or has watched and plan to watch again in the future.

I don't know enough about them to know if one will help me with this piece of crap. My CPU runs at 100% all the time. It never goes down. I have tried everything I can think of to help slow it down (aside from uninstalling the apps-they pay me money!!!). If I added a SSD would that help speed things up for me?

If those programs making you money are sales/coupon services and such, you have your answer.
Your computer has been converted into a continuous reporting agency.
Your bandwidth is also likely increasing.

Cannot explain all the steps to correct on the forums, sorry. But you likely have serious issues.

I know my way around 8/8.1 but I definitely don't like it. 7 is so user friendly and I had zero problems storing and editing pictures. I have yet to find an easy way to manipulate my photos in 8/8.1. It should not be this hard!

I'm with @Croak on this one. Your problem, most likely, isn't the CPU, nor something SSD would solve.
Your computer, most likely, is loaded with malware or worse, which sucks up all the resources. There are no apps, to my knowledge, which pay money... unless you're mining bitcoins. I'd wipe that thing clean and start with a fresh Windoze install, or better yet, Linux. Then see what can be done to increase performace...

    Somewhere between here and there
It's good she went.. I set up a trust fund for my daughters (and son's) college - but she waited until she was 21 and cashed it out instead (since that was an option, college or waiting til they were 21 and cashing it out), said she wanted a house and a car rather than college..

In my daughters case it was good for her that she did because she died happy anyway.. I had simply wanted my kids to go to college..

It's nice to afford it though! College these days is so so so expensive!

It's very expensive. She has gotten two scholarships so far but it doesn't come close to paying for it. We started saving a little bit each month when both girls were little. My youngest still has four years of high school until she goes. We'll end up with about enough to pay for a year and a half or so for each and then will help as much as we can but don't promise to pay for it all. My wife has some health issues and doesn't work right now. We decided for her to stay home with them but they are almost grown now and it would be nice if she could go back to work part time to help pay for college. I'm not going to hold my breath though. It'll all work out in the end. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if the kids got a good education and ended up with some student loans.
