Hi people, not a regular on this thread, but have read most of the posts. I'd like to ask for some input. Got a zmax, and the following day the top cap came right off while unscrewing a vivi, twisting off the wires. Vendor said it was a fluke, and sent another one...I've had it three weeks, and it happened again twice...although this time I did not twist off the wires. I've been able to just put it back in, but now the led display screen is no longer exactly flush. For the 120 bucks (v1) I'm not happy about the top cap instability. I otherwise have liked the mod...but am thinking about recouping my losses at this point while there is still a one month guarantee, sending it back for a refund, and just getting a provari. Any thoughts...

I use the 3.5ml vivis on mine. I turn it until I can feel it makes contact with the pin and then give it another quarter to half a turn. Never had a vivi come loose and no problems with top cap. I think you may be over tightening the vivi?

The first time I've heard of that happening. For it to happen twice to you must mean you are doing something wrong or are the unluckiest person around. Is it the Smok V2 version or the clone?

It's a real smoktech. Hell I don't know why it happened. The first time I was unscrewing, I had a little angular force on it and the top came off...nothing crazy...just popped off and surprised me. On this second one I noticed that the tank was not straight, so in addition to screwing in and out I justified it, and the cap came loose. I am a reasonably seasoned vaper....I didn't crank the tank down. After really knocking it back into place with a little hammer...it's in there solid now. Im not happy about the possibility of it occurring again and tearing off the wires or rendering it useless. Ticks me off that it's just press fitted in there.

I really appreciate people's input. I love the shape, size, looks, screen placement, weight and electronics of the mod...I guess I'm a little too rough for it. I have the reo, Zen, paps, megalodon, roughstack, and countless egos with hardly ever a problem like this (happened one or two times with egos coming a little out of the base...but just pushed it back down, and for 15 bucks I can tolerate it).

I wrote the vendor to send it back. Gonna jump ship for now...maybe a version or two later.... Also waiting for a ss or aluminum vv gripper which has a great size and nice electronics.

My v2 has a new issue. The board inside is loose and moves around when you push the button.
I was having an issue with it not firing every time so I took the battery out and put my pinky up into the tube and I can move the guts around. If I push towards the button it clicks by itself. Not so sure I like that when the battery is putting pressure against it that it can move around inside. It has never been dropped, nor have I been pushing the button too hard. I have the vmax tiny springs in the v2 cap so its not from too much battery pressure against the board. My guess is the glue holding it in there came loose over the past 25 days or so. My V1 is still great.

I'm Gonna get a hold of the vendor and see what they will do before I void the warrantee. If it is too late, I will rip the board out and make a fancy box mod or something. :p

Does any one have a link to some really high quality images of a zmax teardown?

New owner of Zmax.

But does anyone knows what the 8th menu ?
i dont understand that part.

8th menu:

MEN = MEAN (Average voltage not accurate - same as version 1 ZMax)
ANS = RMS (More accurate calculation makes for pretty close to what you set is what you get)

I would suggest setting it to "ANS" and leaving it there. You will be using RMS and whatever you set it to will be close enough to what you actually get to be considered an accurate device. RMS is preferred by most people or MEAN (also called AVG for AVERAGE voltage).

Thanks for that. I had it backwards! I couldn't figure out why I couldn't go above 4.5 watts with an 18650, or 3.5 watts with 2 18630s without it tasting awful :p Now at 8.5 watts and happily doing dragon impressions :)

Here's a cosmetic tip for those that have a ZMax with the cutout slits in the side. If you don't like looking at the battery color showing throuigh, get some of the foil, metallic-looking Christmas wrap and roll a sleeve to go around the battery, just enough to show through the slits. It personalizes it a bit, and looks pretty cool! You can slide it on and off when changing out the batteries.

Edit:This type of wrap is not metallic - it has a paper back and I have tested it with an ohm meter; not conductive - I guess I shouldn't have said foil; it only looks like it.

Okay this is probably a really girly sounding question but hey, I'm a girl. Making a sleeve of foil Christmas wrap for the battery before inserting it..that wouldn't cause any kind of electrical horror show like...I don't know, shorting out or bursting into flames or whatnot? I don't even like to plug in the toaster, and have managed to spend many decades avoiding contact with or knowledge of electrical stuff as much as possible. Now clearly electricity is my new bestest ever friend but I am still pretty scared of misusing it. I have the gunmetal chrome zmax, I love it, but I hate that the red batteries show through making me feel I can't use my jade drip-tip unless I am having a Holiday theme day etc. Maybe it's OCD but it's making me crazy seeing those clashing little stripes turn my brand new first ever gorgeous Phiniac purple-frosted chinese symbol tank into a fashion mistake, even if it's only my beagle and I who know. I love your idea but want to be sure I'm not going to be a.fried or b.maxless by using the wrong paper/foil etc!

I can give you a partial answer .. I know it's safe to wrap a batt with electrical tape and you can get it in assorted colors (black, red, green, yellow & white .. maybe more). Should be able to find these at any decent Hardware Store, maybe even at a large Supermarket.

You could start at the top of the battery, placing the tape at a slight downward angle and do a spiral wrap (does that make sense?) this would cover the entire batt .. what I don't know is if the batt will still fit inside the tube.

I just ordered a SS Z Max (v2) but don't have it in hand yet .. so ... hope that helps.
