So... this year is the first time I am actually trying to e-file tax returns.
1. Not sure I "get it"... I did not believe the federal results, so I went in and arbitrarily changed a few dollar amounts, enough to make a difference. The end result did not change.
Changed them even more. Still the same. So... I guess I will also do them on paper and compare the bottom line number. (FYI: State number DID change.)
2. And oopsie... I have been negligent for YEARS and YEARS entering a certain dividend item (I was just mimicking what a pro did back in 1998 or '99). I guess one of two things: either it gets negated somewhere else and therefore does not make a difference either way, OR the folks at the fed do not compare my 1099-DIV info with the ones they get from the institution. Putting that number in DOES affect the state bottom line... but not the federal (caveat: see #1 above).
So: my first experience with e-filing makes me scratch my head. There really is NOTHING like doing it all on paper.
And this software does NOT print out all the info in the form of a 1040... which would come in handy to do a side-by-side comparison of old-fashioned versus high-tech.
