So... this year is the first time I am actually trying to e-file tax returns.

1. Not sure I "get it"... I did not believe the federal results, so I went in and arbitrarily changed a few dollar amounts, enough to make a difference. The end result did not change. :glare: Changed them even more. Still the same. So... I guess I will also do them on paper and compare the bottom line number. (FYI: State number DID change.)

2. And oopsie... I have been negligent for YEARS and YEARS entering a certain dividend item (I was just mimicking what a pro did back in 1998 or '99). I guess one of two things: either it gets negated somewhere else and therefore does not make a difference either way, OR the folks at the fed do not compare my 1099-DIV info with the ones they get from the institution. Putting that number in DOES affect the state bottom line... but not the federal (caveat: see #1 above).

So: my first experience with e-filing makes me scratch my head. There really is NOTHING like doing it all on paper.

And this software does NOT print out all the info in the form of a 1040... which would come in handy to do a side-by-side comparison of old-fashioned versus high-tech.

good luck, bear! guess i should get an early start this year, too ;) corporate returns are due in a little more than a month .... sigh

It appears I am unable to e-file federal ANYWAY because I have "too many 1099-R literals"... whatever that means.

That may explain why numbers do not change... I've hit some kind of limit and it's making the software gag and simply ignore anything put in after the choke point. NICE that they tell you this AFTER you spend all that time transcribing info from the paper forms.

morning, stone!

maybe make your own? that's been rather popular for years now! :D
No, sorry....I meant the forms that businesses are required to send to me. Luckily, I have an accountant who takes care of the pesky government forms :D (my accountant is super-duper-awesome )

Husbear has e-filed for years and I believe it's licensed as "multi-person use" (up to 3, I think). But I'd hate to run into the same limit, regardless. 2013 WAS/IS a "special case" what with pension and severance EACH generating 2 1099-Rs... plus another 4 or 5 due to financial guy's consolidation effort. I'll probably just use pen and paper again and try next year. God only knows what THAT will be like with ACA and subsidies and stuff.

those are the forms i was talking about!

There is NO REASON at all why "those forms" are not ready to be mailed out by end of FIRST business day of the year. Once the clock ticks over to 00h00m01s on 01jan14, those computers SHOULD just kick in and do all the needed calcs. This "we have until February 15th" crap is inexcusable. AND, I thought 31jan was the "legal limit" on the time anyway.
