Should we start a pool now guessing how much premiums will rise for 2015?

It's almost like I had a premonition!!! I should go out and get a few lottery tickets, NON "quick pick"!!!

Letter arrived yesterday re: PROPOSED rate hike for 2015. +17.8% has been submitted for approval to NYS Department of Financial Services.

It goes on to say that folks buying through the NYS "Marketplace", and specifically those eligible for the premium tax credit, will experience an increase less than +17.8%.

Same old tired excuses we hear every year (1-5 and 7 below):
1 ... rising prices for medical services
2 ... rising prices for prescription drugs
3 ... rising use of medical services
4 ... rising use of prescription drugs
5 ... advances in medical technology (shouldn't those DEcrease 1 and 3 above, rippling down to 2 and 4???)
6 ... new state and federal mandates
... 6a ... mandated mental health coverage
... 6b ... mandated substance abuse coverage
7 ... generally aging population (yep, the young'uns signed up in droves to make up for the geezers)
8 ... expected pricing corrections to current rates (ie: they messed up 2014 rates, underestimated)
9 ... NYCity cost of care higher than "expected"
10 ... Federal Risk Transfer Program between carriers

17.8% will be a hardship for many people. But, even if I experience 100% of that 17.8%, my out-of-pocket premium will remain an obscene bargain. HOWEVER... if there is any change to CURRENT benefits (deductible, co-pays, co-insurance, annual OOP limit), I reserve the right to go ballistic later.

I think you'll appreciate this Atty and Catt,

So i went to the grand opening of the local vape lounge last night. Turns out that one of the owners is the brewmaster from the microbrewery next door. Since the taps at the lounge aren't set up yet, the microbrewery donated beers for the opening. It was fun.

I was talking to a guy who'd brought a whole case of RDA equipment - not unusual at a vape thing. He had two huge heavy mechanical mods with microcoils and 26650 IMR batteries. I asked what power he was using and he had no idea that you could figure out watts. So I opened up the ohms law calculator on my phone to show him and asked him his coil resistance. He had no idea. He's got this collection of equipment but no ohm meter  AND he was getting ready to try to build quad coils.

Imagine large 20-something guy with tattoos being gently schooled on basic battery safety by a grey haired middle-aged woman. Gotta love vaping. LOL.

sounds like an explosion ready to happen. Yikes!

OK SnailPeeps... question for anybody who cares to answer.

I need to replace the current household GE NON-Teflon electric skillet (the temperature probe has stopped working).

Do any of y'all use a NON-Teflon model?... and would you recommend it to a fellow Snail?

The choices are very few... and all have very mixed reviews. The price jump from yes-Teflon to no-Teflon is staggering.

Looking for any suggestions... thanks!

...snip...
Looking for any suggestions... thanks!

1) Wait a bit if you can. Just use other stuff in the meantime. Reason being...they are eliminating Teflon. So EVERYTHING will be non-teflon soon. And prices will drop.
2) Don't use electric skillets. Use crock pots or real skillets. Cast iron or stainless steel (heavy).
3) Get a wok. You can cook anything in a wok (carbon steel). If you have any problems with it, just sand it or wire brush or whatever and re-season it. True for cast iron too.

It might help to know what you use it for.

Basically, I use the Wok for high-heat stir-frys, or sometimes deep-frying, the cast-iron for non-stick other stuff except where simmering acidic things is concerned....then I use stainless. Also stainless for a saute sometimes. I am switching over to non-non-stick.

So far I have a griddle (Cast Iron),
Wok,
cast iron pan,
and there's one or two stainless steel pans/post. I also have a corningware/pyrex pot thing (clear).
Other stuff is still teflon, but making an effort to switch out.

i'm back but scrambling to catch up with my chores ;)

i'm with atty - never had an electric skillet in my life! :D
are you sure atty about the phasing out of teflon? just read an article where it's recommended to replace all teflon products made before 2010 because of drastic improvements ...................

Could be they found a substitute for the nasty-chemical they used. IDK. I'd love to replace em...no $$$$ for that. Will have to remember that for mom for Christmas...GF too.

My approach: Carbon is nature's teflon anyway and we already know it's safe....it's carbon.
Also, technique counts more than teflon. And you can't get a good sear in teflon.
