Dr. Farsalinos is also against dry burning as it may lead to deterioration of metals. Many modders recommend tension builds using a pin vise or a coil winding gizmo for better adhesion instead of torching the wire prior to building a coil.

I watched a video of Basilray making a coil with nickel. He made some quick pulses of power to the nickel coil to work out the hot spots on the coil. Would one consider that dry burning?

~~~~~ Snail.
Thanks Cat/Katya.
@Catt: I knew that about nichrome and kanthal, however they are alloys and the nickel and chromium are bound in the matrix...I suppose. Chromium is a major concern too. Interesting factoid about migration, Catt.
Nickel wire is probably safe, particularly since the device is use to keep the heat level and stop it from over-heating. Of course, some dufus will use a mech to run a nickel wire and over heat it. But for most uses, it would not be over heated when used for the purpose of a regulated device coil. That said, since it is nickel, and nickel is on the cancer list, IDK.
Katya is right...it's all rather "iffy". Probably better than smoking though. ;)
Tcatt's comments on this were very insightful for me.:?: We have already been using nickel in our atties. The difference with the rdna 40, as you said, keeps the coil from over-heating. Which is not only good for the coil but for the juices we use. rDNA40 may end up being the safest alternative we have.:unsure:
The difference, is that the others are alloys that have nickel in their molecular bonds, the nickel wire...is nickel. Not bound up. Kinda like brass is made from copper and zinc. It's a third material, not copper nor zinc, but brass.
And how small of an amount is 'small' amount of nickel? Just say'n, for clarity. Maybe you're right...rDNA40 could turn out to be the safest. IDK. Maybe alloys are just as bad. IDK that either.
Basically, I'm wary of this fad stuff. But you go ahead and have fun. :)
P.S. I'm sold on beer. Been around a while. Even at that, I don't drink much. So............
