I'm not delving into the vocal wars. ;)

No war. Different folks like different music.

One opinion I hold true for every recording artist is: If you're going to cover a song, make it your own. To cover a song in the exact manner as the original, then it's valid to make critical comparisons.

And, totally separate: When autotune is used as originally intended AND it is absolutely undetectable, then have at it! But pity the poor artist who then goes on the road and has to perform live. (And the same thing goes for any studio recording which has undergone massive post-processing... what the fans hear live will just fall flat and be a disappointment.)

I think autotune could be a fantastic TEACHING tool for artists. A dynamic graph in real time of flat/sharp would help a lot as they laid down a vocal track.

Kinda like singing alone with a piano (Yeah, I know they hear the instrumental tracks in headphones, but there's not good feedback...visual feedback would help em)

There aren't a ton of 'artists' these days that can hold a tune. The 'old school' methods of vocal instruction (more formal) are gone.

Sure, there's always been variation in the artist-spectrum. But these days, holding a note isn't 'in style' anyway.

I had a supervisor who is also a musician. His wife is an opera singer...and vocal coach. She also had 'perfect pitch' and could identify a proper note by hearing it (converting the sound frequency to our traditional note scale mentally 100% of the time with no other references...accurately). Basically a human auto-tuner.

I sing flat every time. lol. I can't sing a lick. But I usually know someone that's trained when I hear them. That's why all this sloppy stuff just "bugs" me. It's not that I can't appreciate the talent or enjoy the music. It's more like a basketball player that refuses to practice free-throws because "meh" he doesn't care.

If singing is your profession, practice holding a note and getting it right.

Hehehe speaking of covering songs and actually holding pitch... Im a hard rock pkind of person... I was a band geek back in the day... So for me its the live performances that i judge bands on. If they are horrible live i tend to lose interest in them :p

While most wouldnt like five finger death punch in the acoustic setting he can still sing and he is in tune. Same with a quite a few others. James hetfield of metallica actually had to take formal lessons as fhe either tore or had nodules come up on his vocal chords from straining his voice ao much... Formal training is definitely needed imo. Even if it is just the basics its needed...

and a good morning to mr bear! ;)

unfortunately for aretha, without autotune it becomes painfully clear that hers is a 72yr old voice .............. sigh

I was extremely disappointed when Tina retired. I saw her 4 times during the final tour in 2008/9 and she was absolutely on her game.

She once said, "Never be the last one to leave the party". And she followed her own advice.

I still hope she does something more... even if it's just a CD of new stuff. (And the painful "Beyond" and "Beyond II" do NOT count... I didn't even buy them. They are SO BAD, neither appear on her official discography!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tina_Turner_discography )

Adele's new CD is "strongly rumoured" for November (title: "25") with a world tour in 2015. Not sure I'm that big of a fan to go WAY out of my way to see her live, but if she gets fairly close (ie: Toronto), I may make the trip. Hus won't go because she does absolutely nothing for him. Maybe if I pay for the tix and trip...??? I do hope she cleans up her act a bit (see her uncensored "Albert Hall" performance as to why). She really tarnished what could have been a class act... something the music world could stand.
