Yeah, it's best not to keep those pages open when they auto-refresh. There's things you can do...like no-script, but that will mess you up on stuff more than help. Easiest to just not keep them open. Particularly the ones that rotate through ads.

guess that's my downfall ........... sigh

i might have to learn to leave my news tab set to google news when i walk away or get busy with another tab ;)

@Tibs....yeah, it takes some digging in to figure out what's going on.

I have a "Google News" link in my bookmark toolbar. I check it several times a day between stuff, but I don't usually leave the tab open. And I'm on cable internet. If I was really watching my usage, I wouldn't leave it open long at all and would make sure to close it. It auto-refreshes.

You may want to manually load updates every other day too. So it doesn't check all the time.

Also, flash player checks that every hour. Flash is the biggest pile of crap on the internet, nothing but a security hole and data hog, IMO. IDK if I remember the XP version...I know the win 8 version has a scheduled task that runs every hour to update flash. I usually have it set to run every day instead of every hour. I have to remember to go "fix" it after each update. For me in Win 8.1 is in the scheduled tasks. Finding and editing is a bit hard to explain...it's in the properties of the task.

Windows update only checks once per day so I'd leave that as is.

atty, i got auto-refresh turned off and it works as it should with google news and others - the only exception is nbc news

i also have adobe flash set to 'click to activate' but will try the suggestions in the article you found by going to about:config and set it like that for all plug-ins even though i see nothing but adobe flash in my plug-in folder ................

Yeah, it's a site-by-site thing since there's several ways refresh can be done.

The flash stuff I mentioned was for the UPDATER software, not for flash itself. They have a separate task that runs that goes out and "checks for updates".

the only thing updating automatically in my system is ff - nothing else is entitled to anymore updates ............. too old

i check my add-ons in ff to make sure they are the newest version but it's definitely not automatic!
