Janis was my girl, too. LOVED HER!!! One of a kind. Have you ever listened to Beth Hart? She's got that same kind of gravelly, soulful voice.![]()
I will YouTube Beth Hart and check it out.
I recall reading the review of "Pearl" in Rolling Stone magazine (geeze, my
aunt would have had a coronary if she knew I actually had a subscription to
THAT trash!) where they mentioned a few of the tunes did not sound
completely like Janis. Then they mentioned somebody may have filled in
for the vocals (because Janis passed away DURING the final days of "Pearl"'s
sessions). Kathi McDonald. (Only one cut on "Pearl" was an instrumental.)
I did not think much of it back then, 1971.
But in 1973, Kathi's premier LP was released. The name was familiar from
the review, so I bought the album, "Insane Asylum".
The similarity in voice and styling was eerie and amazing. This is one cut
from her album:
She never released another album on a commercial label, they were all on
small indie labels, available (at that time) directly from the companies. I
have 'em all.
But, she DID take that one instrumental from "Pearl" and put her vocals to
it:
And that is your music lesson for the day.
