Let's hope, for DH's back+hips sake, that it's a fuel pump or filter or maybe alternator/electrical or something. If he has to swap the whole engine that will be hard on him. Still plenty of "diagnostic" time and swap-outs.

That's the thing with engines...sometimes you have to remove the "back seats" to change the oil filter.
The good news is that the older the engine is, the more likely you can work on it. General rule and best guess.
