So basically, on the top of the stroke, if the timing is messed up the piston MAY impact the valves IF IF IF it was not designed to be far enough away from them. So some are "clearance engines" and some are not...depending on design. Maybe non-clearance gets better compression-efficiency? Or is clearance is larger by an inch. IDK.

I thought it was a gear and chain thing, at least on most. Chains wear out too, I guess.
They should ALL be clearance engines though.
